The Los Angeles Chargers or New Orleans Saints may sign Super Bowl potential cut candidate, Kadarius Toney. According to a report, the wide receiver may have been able to win back-to-back Super Bowl championships but he isn’t living up to his expectations. Since moving on from Tyreek Hill, the team was looking for reinforcements and they got Toney midway through his 2022 campaign with the New York Giants. However, he only has one year remaining on his current contract with the Chiefs but his future remains uncertain if he’ll reach a new 2024 campaign with them.

Toney was showing flashes of potential in his rookie year with the Giants in 2021 but injuries have been slowing him down. His trade to Kansas City was in hopes that he would improve his production with one of the best offenses in the league but that hasn’t been happening. Even with JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman out the door, he hasn’t been able to be a major contributor to help Patrick Mahomes. The same case was for when Marquez Valdes-Scantling was around, including Justin Watson and Rashee Rice.

Toney hasn’t been able to emerge ahead even when bringing Hardman back on the roster after he was missing some playing time. He now faces more competition in this year’s training camp as the Chiefs were able to add Marquise Brown in free agency and Xavier Worthy from this year’s draft. There are fewer spots for him on the Kansas City roster but the good news is that the Chargers and Saints may be looking for a cost-effective receiver. Los Angeles Chargers have plenty of receivers including DJ Chark and Ladd McConkey but nobody is a long-term threat.

However, the Saints are desperate for a wideout and Toney will likely be their cheap last resort.

Saints May Become A Better Fit

New Orleans doesn’t have a lot of money to supply Derek Carr with the best offense even though he’s on the hot seat this upcoming year. It doesn’t mean Dennis Allen should throw in the white flag and run down this team without any relevant receivers. The team does have Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed but no star playmakers to advance this team to the next level. Toney is nothing special but he does have Super Bowl experience so he does have that mindset to win a championship.

This should be something that the Saints could look forward to. Toney would likely sign a one-year deal with the team to see what he could do on this offense. With no surprise, the Chiefs did not pick up Toney’s fifth-year option which would lead him to become a free agent next offseason. It shouldn’t be shocking if Kansas City decides to cut him after this year’s training camp.

Other Potential Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

Rashod Bateman has been disappointing for the Ravens even though he was able to land an extension with the team. This leaves a star Zay Flowers as the only reliable pass catcher with incoming Nelson Agholor and rookie DeVontez Walker to compete for the No. 2 or third spot. However, Toney likely won’t win the No. 3 spot on the roster for the Ravens but it gives them another option on the slot. Lamar Jackson is best known for getting receivers open on quick slant plays and Toney may be the perfect fit for that.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers have two receivers, Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen, who can catch darts on the deep threat with plenty of potential. This would leave Xavier Legette competing for a spot on the roster even though he brings some promise to the team. These players may be enough for Bryce Young but they could add Toney at a cheap cost to compete with Terrace Marshall.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys are a dark horse out of any team to sign a wide receiver before this upcoming year. No one should expect America’s team to go all in anymore since they’re comfortable with CeeDee Lamb holding out. Brandin Cooks and Jalen Tolbert alone aren’t getting the job done for the team so a cost-effective Toney could be brought in for emergency depth.
