2,900-Yard Weapon Could Be a Possible Cut Candidate

Here is how 2,900-yard weapon Khalil Herbert could be a possible cut candidate this upcoming training camp and could find a new home.

2,900-yard weapon Khalil Herbert could be a possible cut candidate before training camp. According to a source, the Chicago Bears could move on from the veteran after answering the position this offseason. D’Andre Swift is their future starter for the roster so that leaves Herbert who’s entering his contract year this season. However, some say that the Bears could keep him around for his final season before they let him test free agency which could leave some scratching their head.

The logical thing they could do is put him on the trade block this month, according to one report. Bleacher Report’s speculation says that the Bears cutting Herbert could be one of five cut candidates on the team’s radar. The arrival of Swift could spell the end of Herbert’s run with the Bears. Chicago got him in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and has since been appearing in 42 games.

Plenty of teams will be on watch to bring him in for a visit and become an interest if he’s available. Many rosters would be willing to roll the dice on the veteran averaging 4.9 yards per carry in his career. He has the combination of speed and power that every backfield needs in the league so he would be a key running back in rotation. Herbert doesn’t have starter potential anymore but he could be a good asset as a backup.

He rushed for 1,775 yards and eight touchdowns over his tenure in Chicago. Injuries have been slowing him down to nine starts last season but they are sticking with Swift and Roschon Johnson. This year’s training camp will reveal if the Bears should cut or trade him before the 2024 season. It might make sense to trade him.

Potential Destinations

Los Angeles Chargers

Jim Harbaugh wants to establish a solid running game for Justin Herbert but it doesn’t look bright since Austin Ekeler’s departure. They have two new running backs, J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards but they have an excellent track record of injuries. One should consider that if they don’t have many weapons in the receiver position, they should improve their running game at least. Herbert needs a solid supporting cast if they’re thinking about making a strong run in the playoffs this upcoming season.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens are planning to give a huge workload to Derrick Henry this season after signing him. However, the team may need to think twice about doing so to avoid any future injury he could have. They should probably play it safe and sign someone like Herbert to bolster the backfield behind Henry. Keaton Mitchell is coming off a gruesome injury so adding Herbert could give him some relief if the Ravens plan to rotate the backfield.

Henry may have the speed and power to run through defenders but he isn’t the same running back anymore. It’s a toss-up and Herbert should be in the mix to take a few snaps to keep the mojo going.

Kansas City Chiefs

A few are thinking to themselves why the Chiefs didn’t decide to bring back Jerick McKinnon to the backfield? He was a better running back on paper but they want to see what Clyde Edwards-Helaire could bring to the table. However, it may be better for them to bring McKinnon back but they’re not doing so. Herbert could be the next best cost-effective option if he becomes available as a free agent after training camp.

The thought of Isiah Pacheco and Herbert running the offense with Patrick Mahomes sounds fun for those who are Chiefs fans.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers have been active this offseason in getting a supporting cast for Bryce Young. They’re also bringing in Rashaad Penny to rotate the backfield but there’s been rumors that they could trade Miles Sanders. One trade scenario that would make sense for both sides is sending Sanders to team with Swift while Herbert starts new as a veteran alongside Chubba Hubbard. It sounds like a win-win for both sides if this blockbuster package were to happen.
