Ranking the Best and Worst Position Groups on the 2024 Eagles Roster

2024 Eagles Roster: As training camp approaches, let's take a look at the Eagles roster and vet out the positional strengths and weaknesses.
Landon Dickerson, Eagles offensive guard

The Eagles have undergone serious change throughout the 2024 offseason. When looking at the 2024 Eagles roster, you’ll see the absence of a few key names. Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox have retired, and Haason Reddick was traded. With the roster turnover, it’s worth looking at the strength of each position group and how it may have changed over the offseason. The Eagles roster is still quite good from top to bottom. However, the question will be whether they have correctly addressed their weaknesses in the offseason and whether they have grown weaker in other key areas.

Ranking the Best and Worst Position Groups on the 2024 Eagles Roster

Bottom 3 Position Groups

Linebacker

Linebacker was a huge problem for the Eagles last year. While they have tried to address it in the offseason, the position remains in question. The Eagles signed Zack Baun from the New Orleans Saints and Devin White from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the offseason. However, Baun was a solid but unspectacular player for the Saints. While White had some great moments with the Buccaneers, he struggled this past year and was benched. Nakobe Dean also comes back from injury, but he has not gotten any starting reps thus far. All in all, this is easily the most questionable position group in the 2024 Eagles roster.

Offensive Guard

A strange position group with question marks this year is the offensive guard position. While Landon Dickerson is among the league’s best, the right guard position will be something to watch. 2023 third-round pick Tyler Steen had a rough season his rookie year, and now he’s a slated starter at right guard. The Eagles will likely need Steen to turn things around in a big way. If he does not, we could see a weakness on the Eagles offensive line for the first time in a while.

Tight End

Dallas Goedert headlines the tight end position and is a great player. However, Goedert has never stayed healthy for a full season in his career. The depth at the position looks weak, with Grant Calcaterra and C.J. Uzomah also on the 2024 Eagles roster. If Goedert were to go down during the season the tight end position will not threaten any defenses.

3 Best Position Groups

Offensive Tackles

No surprise here, the Eagles boast two of the top five tackles in the league, in Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. Together, they make the best offensive tackle tandem in the league and are excellent in pass protection and the run game. The Eagles also added talented, but injury-prone former New York Jets tackle Mekhi Becton in the offseason. He will end up serving as a great backup for either tackle spot if he can remain healthy.

Cornerback

One of the worst position groups in 2023, Cornerback looks a whole lot better on the 2024 Eagles roster. Darius Slay and Avonte Maddox are still on the roster, however, the additions of Isiah Rodgers, Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper Dejean will be massive. Each player will vie for the starting spots, but the depth the Eagles have accumulated is also incredible. They have talent, depth, and versatility in the position. However, the biggest addition may be the new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who often puts his corners in great positions to perform.

Defensive Interior

Jalen Carter leads this group in his second year, and fans should expect an ascension from him. He’s an incredible talent that will only continue to climb the ranks of the NFL. Alongside him, Jordan Davis is still a mammoth in the middle of the defense. While there’s room for improvement in 2024, what he brings is still very valuable to the team in run defense. However, keep an eye on Milton Williams. An NFL veteran at this point, Milton Williams could see an increased role in Fangio’s defense and thrive as a pass-rusher next to Carter.

Other Notes on the 2024 Eagles Roster

Other impressive position groups on this 2024 Eagles roster include quarterback and wide receiver. Jalen Hurts is the man for the Eagles at quarterback, but they also acquired a solid backup in Kenny Pickett. Wide receivers, A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith are still the headliners of the offense, however the depth at receiver is a question. Moreover, the replacement for Hasson Reddick, Bryce Huff, will also have big shoes to fill, along with 2023 first-round pick Nolan Smith on the edges of the defense.  The 2024 Eagles roster is still in a great spot, albeit with a little more turnover than usual. While there’s the talent to excite fans on the roster, there are still question marks that could plague the team in 2024.
