Here are the top landing destinations for former Fifth-round pick return-specialist, Jamal Agnew this summer. According to a report, this wide receiver is interesting to talk about considering the league is evolving the kickoff play so there may be teams out there looking for his services. It was surprising for some that Agnew isn’t returning to the Jacksonville Jaguars are having three stellar seasons. However, the Jaguars are moving on to save salary cap as they can’t afford to pay big for a punt returner.

The team is already finding Agnew’s replacement after agreeing to terms with Devin Duvernay. Jacksonville made it a priority under general manager Trent Baalke, signing Agenew and Rudy Ford in 2021 to enhance their roster. However, it seems like the team is finding their new Agnew after Duvernay has some similar characteristics that he could bring to make the returning game efficient again. The new league kickoff rule works in favor of many like Agnew who anticipates there will be over 1,000 more kickoff returns across the league in 2024.

It makes many high-profile specialists like Agnew to be a key figure this upcoming season. Agnew should receive interest soon considering that the value of a specialist is useful as they expect to see a bump in value due to touches being more impactful. The San Diego product isn’t perfect but he does have the potential to be a gadget play for any roster after recording four career punt return touchdowns and two career kickoff scores. However, his career has been winding down since suffering an injury at the end of last season which didn’t make the Jaguars give him another contract.

This could be why he hasn’t been able to find a home but there are teams out there for him.

Potential Destinations

Los Angeles Chargers

Agnew is San Diego native so this is a no-brainer move for the Chargers to look into. Jim Harbaugh is in town and was a head coach at San Diego in the early 2000s. However, they didn’t get to play with each other but that home-town connection gives things a different feel. Connections seem like a good thing since they kick the tires for any roster to establish a chemistry of familiarity.

The Chargers already have a strong returner after drafting Derius Davis in last year’s draft. However, Los Angeles doesn’t have anything to lose this season considering they’ve been getting about any receiver since Mike Williams and Keenan Allen aren’t around anymore. The Chargers could continue to fortify the backend of their depth chart with two solid returners.

Carolina Panthers

Even though running backs Chuba Hubbard and Rashaad Penny have experience doing kickoff returns, they should still bring someone in like Agnew to solidify the role. First-round Xavier Legette could be in the mix for that position but it’s easier for the Panthers to fill him in behind Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen. Agnew is an option to watch out for if they don’t see anyone at training camp distinguishes themselves.

Dallas Cowboys

America’s team may be bringing back KaVontae Turpin but they should consider getting him in the mix as a wide receiver. The Cowboys don’t have a lot of reliable pass-catchers other than rely on CeeDee Lamb who’s waiting for a new contract. However, Rico Dowdle has been helping return punts but he hasn’t been anything for a roster that has potential at the position. If they want to beef up the competition, they could bring someone in like Agnew to compete for the starting job.

Agnew has some connections with the new Cowboys offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer. The chemistry is already there but it’s a matter of if they make another free agency move.
