Super Bowl contender the Kansas City Chiefs are named the best fit to sign Pro Bowler cornerback, Stephon Gilmore this offseason. The veteran is still looking for the right opportunity as he hasn’t been able to ink a deal. This could change for the former Defensive Player of the Year who may join the consecutive Super Bowl champions. However, the Chiefs still look solid on paper with Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams in the position.

One outlet believes they need to add a veteran cornerback after trading L’Jarius Sneed to the Titans. The Chiefs were running out of options after making the move to save cap after giving Chris Jones a monster extension. Marcus Mosher of The 33rd Team suggested that Gilmore would be the best remaining free agent the Chiefs should sign. Kansas City is in the post-Sneed era so they need the help they can get to make the secondary great.

It probably won’t be a long-term extension for Gilmore who is already past his prime days. They’re hoping the guys they have now can step up but no one should expect that for that to happen to come week one. Kansas City has been leaning on their defense last season to come up big on possessions so cornerback is their biggest need. They’re still in the mix to find a receiver but they’ll probably fill a veteran to fill the void on their secondary.

Gilmore’s addition would be huge for a team that is looking for a consistent player. He isn’t anything like Sneed but after 17 appearances with the Dallas Cowboys, he can still show up. Adding a veteran like Gilmore is a no-brainer move for Steve Spaguolo’s defense. Chiefs are in the mix for a three-peat.

He May Still Be Championship Material

Gilmore isn’t getting younger but that shouldn’t mean for a contender looking to sign him. The Pro Bowler is hitting 34 this season but he remains a solid option after having one of the seasons with the Cowboys in a while. He isn’t what he used to be with the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers but he still has something in his tank to provide. He’s a Super Bowl champion so that experience alone puts him at the top of the list for a team that’s been consistently going there mostly every year.

He only surrendered 6.9 yards per target with an 82.7 passer rating while posting a low 5.6 missed tackle percentage. Pro Football Focus gave him a grade of 72 or higher for coverage, tackling, run defense and overall. The former first-rounder grade was ranked 35th among all cornerbacks with 20% or more. He could easily provide insurance to a team that needs it on a one-year basis.

If this is what the Chiefs are looking for then another ring could be already in their possession. There’s no such thing as an overcrowding room of cornerbacks since it’s temporary. Here are some other potential destinations for Gilmore.

Potential Destinations

The Chargers are rebuilding after a failing year under Brandon Staley but there are high hopes now. Jim Harbaugh has been making moves on defense to improve their roster while removing some on offense. He should consider taking Gilmore as a low-risk veteran who knows how to win ball games. When you share a division with the Chiefs, you gotta have the best of the best to show up.

There were rumors that the Saints could be moving on from star cornerback, Marshon Lattimore. If that’s true, then they could Gilmore as a replacement until they look to get younger in their secondary talent.
