J.J. McCarthy NFL Draft Overview

The Michigan Wolverines have finally won their first championship since 1997. A big reason for their success this season is QB J.J. McCarthy. On day one, the former top 40 recruit had tremendous hype to lead the Wolverines to glory and delivered. In the 2022 season, McCarthy threw for 2,719 yards, 22 touchdowns, and five ints. However, the lousy performance in the playoffs against TCU left questions. In 2023, McCarthy left no doubts, showing improved accuracy and decision-making with 2,991 yards, 22 TDS, and 4ints. Does McCarthy have a franchise QB potential like his draft competitors? Let’s dig into the film!

J.J. McCarthy Player Evaluation

McCarthy’s Strengths

  • He has good accuracy and timing when throwing across the middle of the field.
  • Played in NFL pro-style offense
  • Above-average athleticism. He can extend plays by running for first downs or to make throws on the move.
  • He quickly identifies his hot reads and does not mind checking down to RBS.
  • Slightly above average accuracy when throwing in the middle of the field on slants, glance routes, and digs.
  • He displays good toughness in the pocket and does not mind taking hits to get the ball out.

McCarthy’s Weakness

  • There are injury concerns, with him only weighing in at 202 pounds. I wonder if he could hold up with a slender frame and build.
  • Sometimes, he struggles to incorporate the right amount of arc and touch, particularly when attempting throws outside of the numbers.
  • He has difficulties throwing accurately when under pressure or when not in a comfortable position.
  • He struggles with processing and timing when it comes to anything beyond his initial read.
  • Inconsistent deep ball outside the numbers.
  • Limited drop-back pass reps caused late in the down processing to be raw and inconsistent.

Projection: Early Second Round Pick

Bottom Line

McCarthy is a young quarterback prospect with immense potential to become a successful starter in the NFL. His raw talent is intriguing, and he has the necessary physical attributes to excel in the league. He possesses above average arm strength, athleticism, and has experience in a pro-style system. McCarthy’s skill set is best suited for a Shanahan/Payton offensive scheme that can fully utilize his talent and aid in his development.

McCarthy has consistently shown proficiency in operating the intermediate/short passing game over the middle and has made significant progress in his decision-making abilities. His pocket toughness and arm talent provide him with the necessary tools to execute plays effectively. However, he still needs to develop his ability to progress from the pocket and improve his consistency outside the numbers and processing.

Despite his current limitations, it is impossible to ignore McCarthy’s potential. With time and proper training, he could add more weight and strength to his frame, which would undoubtedly enhance his overall performance on the field. The sky’s the limit for this young quarterback, and if he can refine his weaknesses, McCarthy could become a formidable force in the NFL.
