Can Anthony Richardson Become as Good as Lamar Jackson?

Anthony Richardson has often been compared to Lamar Jackson. Can the talented rookie eventually become as good as the 2019 MVP?

Anthony Richardson could develop into the next Lamar Jackson. But for that to happen, he has a long way to go.

The Indianapolis Colts drafted Richardson fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, the rookie quarterback struggled to stay healthy, playing just four games this season.

Richardson suffered a grade 3 AC joint sprain in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. He then underwent season-ending surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder.

The NFL world hasn’t seen much of Richardson. No one knows for sure what type of career he’ll end up putting together. It’s possible he could be the league’s next great dual-threat quarterback on the same level as Jackson.

Lamar Jackson’s Career Thus Far

Jackson spent three years with the Louisville Cardinals, winning the Heisman Trophy as a sophomore. He was subsequently drafted by the Baltimore Ravens 32nd overall in 2018. During his rookie year in Baltimore, Jackson became the starting quarterback after an injury to Joe Flacco. He guided the team to the postseason that year.

Jackson was named the league’s MVP the following season. He threw for 3,127 yards, 36 touchdowns and six interceptions. The Florida native also rushed for 1,206 yards and seven touchdowns. Jackson has battled injuries over the years. However, he continues to be one of the league’s top quarterbacks when healthy.

This year, Jackson is expected to win the second MVP of his career. He has thrown for 3,678 yards and 24 touchdowns. He has rushed for 821 yards and five touchdowns as well. More importantly, the three-time Pro Bowler led the Ravens to a league-best 13 victories. It will be interesting to see if he can take the team to the Super Bowl.

Richardson Has Gobs of Potential

Richardson was one of three quarterbacks taken in the top five of the 2023 draft. Bryce Young, who was drafted first overall by the Carolina Panthers, and C.J. Stroud (second overall by the Houston Texans) were the other two. Stroud, who impressively led Houston to the playoffs this season, is looking like the best of the trio so far. Yet, Richardson could emerge as the cream of the crop later on.

Richardson is jam-packed with potential. The 6-4, 244-pounder possesses elite athleticism and a rocket arm, which could make him a nightmare for opposing defenses. Before his shoulder injury this season, Richardson became the league’s first quarterback to ever rush for four touchdowns in his first three starts. He is often compared to Jackson due to his amazing running ability.

Jackson is undoubtedly one of the greatest running QBs of all time. He’s the only quarterback in history with more than one 1,000 rushing-yard season. Could Richardson eventually become as good as Lamar Jackson? Getting on the same level as a possible two-time MVP is a difficult task.

For starters, he must shake off the injury bug. He also has to develop into a solid passer and not just a rushing quarterback. Jackson has improved as a passer after being labeled as a guy who can “just run.”

The Colts had an exciting year, almost making the playoffs with backup Gardner Minshew under center. Next season could be much more fun with a healthy Richardson running the show. Everyone will be keeping an eye on AR-5, looking to see if he’s a future superstar or not.
