Rex Ryan to New York Jets: “No More Excuses”

Rex Ryan, former New York Jets coach, gave his thoughts on improving the team if he was still the head coach.

Rex Ryan, former New York Jets coach, gave his thoughts on improving New York if he was still there. He recently appeared on ESPN Radio with Jake Asman and Ty Butler. On the radio, he gave his thoughts on the team’s state this season, which has been rough.

Ryan coached the Jets back when Darrelle Revis was in his prime as a shutdown corner. His best seasons with New York were back-to-back AFC championship appearances in 2009 and 2010. Rex Ryan’s coaching style revolved around the run game and the 3-4 defense (three defensive linemen and four linebackers). Ryan’s aggressive defense resulted in his defensive teams being at the top of the league.

What Did Rex Ryan Say About the Jets?

Appearing on ESPN Radio, Ryan said, “I think I would’ve started with protection first with my Quarterback. I think that’s a given; their offensive line stinks. Give this guy (Zach Wilson) a chance to locate down the field and make throws. As the play extends, now he can get outside and get more of a run-pass option when he breaks the pocket.”

In speaking about Woody Johnson, Ryan said, “Make no mistake, he is going to expect this team to make a deep run in the playoffs, and if they don’t, heads are going to roll.” Rex Ryan also said, “There’s no more excuses. Either you get it done, or it’s a bust, and I think Robert Saleh is good with that. Like, give me a chance to have Aaron Rodgers out there. I’m going to say this: when you have a Hall-of-Fame Quarterback, it’s hard not to win.

What Do The Jets Need for Next Season?

A Productive Offense

The Jets need to invest a whole lot in fixing their offense. Offensive ineptitude has been a big problem for New York all season. The Jets rank 31st in offense through week 17, 30th in passing offense, and 29th in rush offense.

The offensive woes have been the status quo for the Jets, so they brought in Aaron Rodgers to end the offensive ineptitude. Unfortunately, Rodgers went down with a season-ending Achilles tear just four plays into the season. Scoring issues have been a glaring problem for the Jets, as they went without scoring an offensive touchdown on a few occasions.

No. 2 Receiver and Offensive Line

Besides Garrett Wilson, New York needs a No. 2 threat at wide receiver. Allen Lazard has been a disappointment this year and was a healthy scratch on Black Friday against the Miami Dolphins. Lazard didn’t record a single catch against the Washington Commanders on Christmas Eve. He’s only had 23 receptions for 311 yards and one touchdown for the year.

They also need to continue to use Breece Hall more, as he emerged as a reliable tailback. However, New York’s primary needs are at receiver and offensive line. To be a serious contender in 2024, New York must get their offense in order, starting with the offensive line, which had quite a few shuffles this year. Of course, losing Alijah-Vera Tucker to injury didn’t help things at all.

Despite being eliminated from playoff contention, the New York Jets will look to end their season on a high note Sunday against the New England Patriots.
