Jahmyr Gibbs 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

A Surprise Draft Pick

Not many people saw Jahmyr Gibbs going as the #12 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. However, the Detroit Lions zeroed in and grabbed their guy. Gibbs is a 21-year-old stud coming off an excellent performance in college. In 2022 against the #20 ranked Arkansas Razorbacks, Gibbs had 18 carries for 206 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He also caught the ball twice for 20 yards. The very next week against SEC foe Texas A&M Gibbs had 21 carries for 154 yards while catching three passes.

Gibbs was also very productive through the air with nine catches for 74 yards against Texas. Five catches for 48 yards against Tennessee and four catches for 65 yards against University of Louisiana Monroe. Gibbs finished the 2022 season with 151 carries for 926 yards, an average of 6.1 per carry, and seven touchdowns. Gibbs caught 44 passes for 444 yards, an average of 10.1 yards per reception, and three touchdowns.

The Best Value at ADP for A Rookie

Bijian Robinson is one of the most sure running back prospects to join the NFL in the last few seasons. The price tag on Robinson is a hefty one though. He is currently going as the third overall running back at 8.3 ADP in full PPR on Sleeper. Gibbs however, is going off the board as the 14th running back with an average draft position of 35.5.

Dan Campbell is a no-nonsense type of coach. When he goes out of his way to select a player, there’s no doubt that player is going to be used and used a lot. The Detroit Lions had the third most total yards of any offense in the entire NFL in 2022 and don’t show any signs of slowing that down. D’Andre Swift is out of town. Jameson William is suspended for six games and is already battling injury. Amon-Ra St. Brown has also been battling injury. They are going to turn to Gibbs early, and often.

The departure of D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams opens up a lot of touches from 2022 that will have to be filled in 2023. Swift played in 14 games and accounted for 99 carries for 542 yards and five rushing touchdowns. Swift also made an impact in the receiving game catching 48 passes for 389 yards and an additional three tough downs through the air. Jamaal Williams played in all 17 games and racked up 262 carries for 1,066 rushing yards and an astonishing 17 touchdowns on the ground.

Even with the addition of David Montgomery coming over from the division rival Chicago Bears, Jahmyr Gibbs should be the lead back in Detroit and with his ability to both run and catch, Gibbs has the potential to be the steal of the draft and turn into a #1 running back in fantasy football.
