The Dallas Cowboys are acquiring Former 2021 NFL No. 3 Draft pick, Trey Lance from San Francisco, in exchange for a fourth-round pick. Lance finds his new home with the Dallas Cowboys under franchise quarterback, Dak Prescott. The league erupted when news came out, but he gets the chance to start fresh. The Dallas Cowboys also informed that they are releasing third-string quarterback Will Grier after the preseason.

However, they gave him the chance to play the rest of the preseason to prove to other NFL teams that he can still make a play. The Dallas Cowboys are moving Lance to second-string, and may as well keep Cooper Rush. But, it gives Lance an opportunity to learn from Prescott and develop under Mike McCarthy’s offense. After Dallas’ struggles to find a reliable backup quarterback, they have that now in Trey Lance.

Future Star: Trey Lance Heads to the Dallas Cowboys
Trey Lance Has a New Home
Two years after being drafted, the era was over for Lance in San Francisco before it began. He had a chance to develop as a solid quarterback, but the 49ers failed after putting him at third-string behind quarterbacks, Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold. He now becomes a reliable backup for Prescott, a star with his fair share of struggles throughout the season from interceptions to injuries. The question now looms is whether Lance will be the future star for the Cowboys if Prescott continues to struggle or suffers another injury.
Lance is more hungry than ever to get his start in his new home as the new backup quarterback. Especially, after his tumultuous tenure in San Francisco where he only suited up for just eight games. In those games, he only got four starts recording 797 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. Lance later suffered a season-ending right ankle injury in 2022 that held him back.
Now, he is healthy and ready to go when his name is called up to play. But, Cowboys fans and the NFL have to wonder if Trey Lance will become the starter as the future star of the organization. Despite that, It is an exciting time to have two reliable quarterbacks to spice up the field for Dallas.
The pressure continues to mount on quarterback, Dak Prescott in his contract deal that lasts through 2024. It would be costly for Dallas to move on Prescott early as he’s set to make $29 million next season.
The Clock is Ticking
Fans and the NFL are anticipating to see if Prescott can return Dallas to the promised land sooner rather than later. They have not done so since 1995, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers under Troy Aikman. In his career, Prescott only has four playoff appearances and has only gone so far to appear in the divisional round. He has accumulated eight touchdowns and only two interceptions.
These numbers showcase his abilities on the field and his effectiveness in the pocket, but not enough for the goal for Dallas. Jerry Jones claims that the Trey Lance trade has no effect on Prescott. However, no one’s job is safe in today’s NFL world when a team is eager to chase a ring. Prescott didn’t get a heads-up following the Trey Lance trade but understands that it’s business.
Following the preseason finale win against the Las Vegas Raiders, he said “I can’t say I expected a heads-up, no. I understand that that’s business. I understand that they’re probably on a timeline, they need to get something done. He felt like that strengthened this team and, yeah, ready to welcome [Lance] and, yeah, I mean knowing the strength of the quarterback room that we have.”
Business per usual may very well be the case when 2024 comes and there are contract extension talks. It potentially may be a problem as Prescott will expect a big “payday” as they still will have Lance as their future star.
No Worries
For this season, there aren’t any worries for Dallas Cowboys fans and coaches, for now. Prescott has a new play-caller and will get let loose, thanks to Mike McCarthy. Prescott got the chance to be a play-caller himself following the 31-16 preseason win over the Raiders. Will Grier put on a show in his last game with the Dallas Cowboys?
Grier capped off the game by completing 29 of 35 passes with two touchdowns and ran for 54 yards. This shows Prescott’s abilities off the field, where he can call plays to help as an offensive coordinator. But, credit is towards Grier for putting on an exciting exit debut for a team to grab him when he is released. The game solidifies that Prescott is not going anywhere, thanks to his temporary role as offensive coordinator.
For this season, Prescott has Brandin Cooks, the four horsemen, and talented running backs ready to give him a fresh start. It’s no secret that Kellen Moore, who was recently released, did not give the answer to Prescott. The anticipation rests with the organization to see how long this fresh breath of air will last. Lance may very well be ready to go if Prescott suffers another injury or struggles.
