Patrick Mahomes: Reigning Super Bowl MVP
The list of things 27-year-old Patrick Mahomes hasn’t done yet is shorter than the list of things he has done. The former Detroit Tigers MLB draft pick, now the all-star Kansas City Chiefs quarterback enters his seventh season in the NFL. For the second straight season he’ll be losing his top wide receiver, last year it was Tyreek Hill moving on to the Miami Dolphins, this year it’s Juju Smith-Schuster who has left in free agency to sign with the New England Patriots.
Starting left tackle Orlando Brown left for the Cincinnati Bengals, the Chiefs brought in Donavan Smith to protect Patrick Mahomes’ blindside. Andrew Wylie departed from the right side of the line, and Jawaan Taylor joined the team as a replacement. Mecole Hardman joined Juju Smith-Schuster in the AFC East by joining the New York Jets. Rookie Rashee Rice and free agent Richie James join the team as replacements. All of the Chiefs’ running backs return along with most importantly Patrick Mahomes’ favorite target, tight end Travis Kelce.

The #1 Fantasy Quarterback
Patrick Mahomes finished 2022 as the top fantasy football quarterback to nobody’s surprise. What may be surprising is this was his first finish in the top spot since 2018. both 2020 and 2021, Mahomes ended the season as the fourth overall quarterback, while in 2019 he settled for eighth on the season due to missing two games during the season.
In 2022 Patrick Mahomes finished as the top quarterback in just one week but his consistency is what led to his number one overall finish. In 11 different weeks, Mahomes was quarterback six or better finishing as the second-best quarterback in four separate weeks. Only three weeks on the season did he have “down weeks” finishing as the quarterback 11, 12, and 13 in weeks three, 13, and 18 respectively. The moral of the story is Patrick Mahomes is consistent and he is good. He will produce just about every week for you and will win you some weeks almost by himself.

The biggest question when it comes to Patrick Mahomes is whether he is worth the draft cost or not. As laid out above he’s almost a fantasy lock. Back in the old days, you could always wait til the end to draft a quarterback and they all produced about the same no big deal. For today’s fantasy game, quarterbacks make a big difference. In 1-QB leagues, Patrick Mahomes is currently going at 13.0 ADP. In a 12-player league, this means you are grabbing him as that first pick of the second round, pairing him with Saquon Barkley, AJ Brown, Ceedee Lamb, Nick Chubb, or Devante Adams instead of double-dipping on two of these players.
All in all, the cost is too high. But at the same time, it’s hard to say don’t take him. If you decide to select Mahomes near the end of round one, barring injury your only quarterback worry will be who to play on his week 10 bye. Hit the ball out of the park with the rest of your picks, and Patrick may carry you to another fantasy football championship.
