What the New Miami Dolphin Says About Playing New England in 2023

Newly acquired offensive tackle for the Miami Dolphins Isaiah Wynn spoke with the media yesterday and touched upon his time in New England.

The New England Patriots will have a familiar opponent down in South Florida this season, as Isaiah Wynn signed with the Miami Dolphins over the weekend. Wynn, a former first-round pick of the Patriots 2018 out of Georgia, started 40 games after missing his rookie season with a torn Achilles.

Isaiah Wynn Signs One-Year Deal With Miami

Isaiah Wynn commented with the Miami media yesterday and talked about his time in New England and how it will play against them.

“They’re the team that drafted me, so I appreciate everybody in that organization, from the staff to the players, I thank them. My time was good there, and then it’s going to be fun playing against them because especially seeing them twice a year being on the opposite side; being there previously, you play against guys that may have already been there, and now I’m on the other side now. So, it’s always a fun camaraderie. We’ll see how it all plays out for sure.”

Wynn’s Time in New England

Isaiah Wynn may have had a bad season last year, but that is not to knock the rest of his time as a Patriots. Wynn started a career-low seven games last season with the New England Patriots and only played in 73% of available snaps in his nine games on the active roster. When Isaiah Wynn was healthy as a Patriots, he was a solid left tackle, and the issue was he was rarely healthy.

In 2020 Wynn started ten games and played in 97 percent of his available snaps. In 2021 he started 15 out of the 16 that he was active in and played a career-high 916 snaps at left tackle. Wynn did have a diminished role in the 2022 season while also switching from the left side to right at the tackle spot.

“You take whatever that coach is giving you, they give you a task. The job, you’ve just got to complete it.”

Contract Breakdown, Isaiah Wynn Possible Starter at Right Tackle

Wynn also gave a comment on why he wanted to sign with the Miami Dolphins. For reference Isaiah Wynn made roughly 22 million in five years in New England, nearly making half the 22 million in salary last season. Wynn’s deal with the Dolphins, per Field Yates, is a base salary of 2.3 million but, with incentives, can cap out at 2.7 million.

“Definitely the coaching staff and the players, they’re definitely building something special. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? And then get the opportunity to come home, that was a no-brainer for me. No doubt.”

Isaiah Wynn will slot in as a possible starter on the right side as Miami has four-time pro bowler Terron Armstead at left tackle. 2020 first-round pick Austin Jackson, who is coming off a season where he played two games after suffering a debilitating ankle injury, will compete with Wynn for the right tackle spot. Wynn looks to revitalize his career with the Dolphins, but Patriots fans hope Matthew Judon can make life hell for him in the two matchups this season. Wynn will return to New England as Miami travels to Foxboro in week 2 for Sunday Night Football to face the Patriots.
