Austin Corbett Signs With Carolina Panthers

After spending the 2021 season with the Los Angeles Rams, Austin Corbett has now signed with the Carolina Panthers.

Austin Corbett spent the 2021 season with the Los Angeles Rams. He had a solid 2021 season in Los Angeles en route to the team’s first Super Bowl victory since they relocated from St. Louis. His 69.6 PFF grade ranked 22nd out of 82 guards. On the season he was a slightly better run blocker than pass blocker (68.5 versus 63.1 grade from PFF) but performed well in both facets of the game. Austin Corbett has now signed with the Carolina Panthers.

Corbett was initially a walk-on at the University of Nevada. After redshirting, he ended up starting all four years at tackle. In the lead-up to the draft, most thought he would be a candidate to transition to the inside at the pro level due to size and athleticism. The Cleveland Browns drafted Corbett in the second round, pick 33 overall, in the 2018 NFL Draft. Despite the speculation of a move to guard or center, the Browns initially viewed him as their potential left tackle of the future.

As a rookie, he was not able to win a starting position and played only 14 snaps the entire season. The following season Cleveland opted to try him out inside. Again, he was not able to win a starting position and found himself buried on the roster. He was beginning to look like a complete bust, but then three weeks into the season the Browns were surprisingly able to trade him to the Rams for a fifth-round pick in the 2021 draft.

Corbett quickly made an impact in L.A. and appeared in eight games, and started seven at left guard. But despite the change of scenery, his performance was below-average. He finished 2019 with an overall grade of 51.8. The 2020 season was a different story when Corbett switched from left to right guard and flourished. He started all 16 games and posted a 73.4 grade, good for 11th at the position. He remained a fixture at the position in 2021 and started every game in the regular season and the playoffs.
