Urban Meyer deserved to be relieved of his duties as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The turmoil that Meyer caused within the franchise came to a boiling point with the media and fan base. While the head man promised to “Own It”, he owned nothing through a 2-11 record in what likely could be his only season as an NFL head coach.
Urban Meyer Deserved To Be Fired by Jacksonville Jaguars
When Meyer was hired, there were already expectations set. Bringing in the first overall pick in Trevor Lawrence had the fan base thinking of a potential solid season. But to date, the Jaguars are one of the three worst teams in the NFL. The off-field and on-field incidents that Meyer had been through supplanted his time in Duval. From the off-field late night issues in October to calling his assistant coaches losers, Meyer owned nothing and lost the respect of the team, media and fan base. His time in Jacksonville needed come to an end sooner rather than later. His leash kept getting shorter strictly based on the team’s performance; but, as the off-field controversy piled up, there was no justification for the Jaguars to keep Urban Meyer around.
Turmoil Within the Franchise
Jaguars owner Shad Khan said on Monday that he would make the right decision for the team. But there was only one right decision: to fire Urban Meyer. Not only is the team below average, but the coaching aspect of it just wasn’t working out. The head man benched James Robinson in two straight games after he fumbled. However, the passing game isn’t working, so why not try to be effective on the ground? On the flip side, Meyer had stated that specific players are seeing action on defense. But a few of them have yet to see the field in 2021. pointing to the coach not even knowing who was playing on his defense.
What Could Have Been Under Urban Meyer in Year One
At the time the hire sounded like a great idea. But 13 games into the season, it was clear that Jacksonville made the wrong choice. After firing Doug Marrone, Meyer was brought in to get Jacksonville back to relevancy. Even with the talent, he just wasn’t able to do so. Sure, his college coaching days were great. Two BCS National Championships at Florida and a College Football Playoff title with Ohio State. But that was far from a guarantee that he’d succeed in the NFL. Don’t expect to see Meyer coach an NFL game again.

His mantra entering the season was “Own It”. Just what has he owned? Not a single thing. The time had come for Meyer to be let go. If the Jaguars are going to have success, it wasn’t going to happen under Meyer. Because with a 2-11 record, Jacksonville is on the brink of another top-five NFL Draft selection. That was not the initial plan when Meyer was hired. The rebuild looks like it will drag on a few more years.
