There is a lot to take in with the first preseason game in the books for the New York Jets. Zach Wilson came out firing and made virtually no mistakes. The wide receivers were finding ways to get open. But, the most pleasantly surprising part of the game was New York Jets Bryce Huff and how he left his mark on defense.
One of the biggest, if not the biggest, signings for the Jets this off-season was pass rusher, Carl Lawson. The question that was left unanswered was who would play on the other side of Lawson.
The second-year undrafted free agent Huff took advantage of his opportunities in the first preseason game and made his case on why he should be the starting, or at least rotational, pass rusher on the other side of the defensive line.
New York Jets Bryce Huff Shines in First Preseason Game
Huff was playing with the starting unit in the first preseason game, and he did not waste any time making an impact. Huff came away with a sack on New York Giants quarterback Mike Glennon on the first third down of the game.
But Huff didn’t stop there. He finished the night with two sacks and three total tackles. These have been some of the best plays Huff has made while wearing the green and white. If he keeps this up, he could see himself starting in games when they matter.
The Jets have been searching for pass rushers for several seasons. It looks like they may have found one with Lawson coming to New York after spending the last four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. But they still need a second one.
Gang Green has players like John Franklin-Myers, who spent some time last year playing on the edge but might not be a permanent solution. If Huff can step in and be someone who can take on a majority of snaps in this role, then it will put the Jets in a positive position for the future.
It will also help bolster this already strong defensive line. Being able to rely on the defensive line generating pressure is crucial for the Jets this upcoming season. The cornerback group is one of the youngest in the league and will need all the help they can get.
Of course, there are two more preseason games left to play, and anything can happen. But, after the first preseason game, it looks like Huff has put himself in an incredible position to take on a starting role on this defense.
