Nelson Agholor, New England Patriots, Agree to Contract
Nelson Agholor somewhat revitalized his career last season with the Raiders. Many were unsure if Agholor would even make the roster after having built the reputation as someone that struggles with drops. In 16 games, Agholor recorded eight receiving touchdowns while averaging almost 20 yards per reception. He also logged 48 receptions for 896 yards.
Nelson Agholor initially entered the league in 2015 as the 20th overall pick of the NFL draft. Selected by the Philadelphia Eagles, Agholor recorded just 283 receiving yards and one touchdown his rookie season. Additionally, Agholor helped lead the Eagles to a 7-9 record that same season. It was a disappointing start to the career of a player whom the Eagles had extremely high hopes for.
In total, Nelson Agholor spent five years with the Eagles. During that five-year stint, Agholor never once made the Pro Bowl. In his five seasons there, he recorded just over 2500 yards receiving. Agholor also logged 18 receiving touchdowns and 224 receptions. He averaged 35.4 yards per game during that span as well. Along with underperforming, Agholor also built a reputation as someone that struggled to focus on the details. This train of thought was reinforced with a plethora of dropped passes. The Eagles eventually decided it was best to move on from Agholor, and thus let him become a free agent after the 2019 season.
Despite a bounce-back season in 2020, Nelson Agholor still has plenty to prove in the NFL. While it is not the sole determining factor for success, Agholor has yet to make a Pro Bowl. He has also yet to eclipse 1000 yards receiving in a single season. Those two factors are typically the starting point for discussions about elite receivers. If Agholor hopes to join that group, he will need to continue focusing on the details. If he can stay out of his own head, then the sky is the limit for this former first-round receiver.
