According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Carolina Panthers are signing offensive guard Michael Schofield to a one-year deal. Schofield played every snap for the Los Angeles Chargers last season, making him a durable pick-up for the Panthers. The Panthers have yet to release the financial details of the deal.

Carolina Panthers, Michael Schofield Agree to Deal
Schofield entered the league in 2014 after the Denver Broncos selected him in the third-round of the 2014 NFL Draft. After several solid seasons with the team, the Broncos decided to cut Schofield prior to the 2017 season. The Chargers decided to take a shot on the 29-year-old guard and picked him up off the waiver wire. After playing out the final year in his rookie contract, Schofield inked a two-year deal with the Chargers in 2018. The dependable guard appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers in 2019, making 16 starts for the team at right guard.
The Schofield signing marks the second former Chargers offensive linemen who the Panthers have acquired this off-season. Just a few weeks back, the Panthers and Chargers agreed upon a deal which sent All-Pro Trai Turner to the Chargers in exchange for Russell Okung.

With this move, the Panthers will more than likely move Schofield over to the left guard position, seeing as how the team already has a consistent starter in Taylor Moton holding down the right guard spot. This would replace the need for the Panthers to start Dennis Daley at left guard. Daley played well as a rotational piece for the Panthers in 2019, but clearly wasn’t ready to take on a starting role. The move allows the Panthers to give new quarterback Teddy Bridgewater some adequate protection, something the team failed to do with previous signal-caller Cam Newton.
