The Green Bay Packers need to draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Most quarterbacks like Tua Tagovailoa, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts will be off the board by the time the Packers make their selection with the 30th pick in the draft. But, Utah State quarterback, Jordan Love should still be on the board when the Packers pick in the first round and they should target him.
Green Bay Packers Should Target Jordan Love in 2020 NFL Draft
Reason Packers Should Draft a Quarterback
Most fans will wonder why the Packers would take a quarterback when they still have Aaron Rodgers. The Green Bay Packers should draft a quarterback while they still have Aaron Rodgers because a team never wants to be in the position of not having a succession plan at quarterback. The San Francisco 49ers were in that exact situation before they traded for Jimmy Garoppolo. The 49ers had Brian Hoyer, CJ Beathard, and Nick Mullens on their roster, but none of them are worthy starters in the NFL. It’s also why the Niners were in last place in their division during that time. Aaron Rodgers is 36 years old. As he said last season he is “coming up on the back nine of my career.” Rodgers won’t play forever and he is one major injury away from starting to really consider retirement. So, the Packers should be looking to draft a quarterback in the first or second round this year and develop him for a year or two. If Rodgers then decides to hang it up early, the Packers would have their quarterback for the next decade waiting in the wings. But, if Rodgers decides to keep on playing, Green Bay could possibly trade said quarterback to a quarterback needy team for a bunch of draft picks and restart this process all over again. It’s smart and proactive. That’s why it makes sense.
Why Packers Should Target Jordan Love
Jordan Love just finished his junior season at Utah State. He started for two full seasons, going 21-11. This past season, he threw for 3,402 yards, 20 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. While it is way too early to say Love will be the next Aaron Rodgers, there are some similarities between the two quarterbacks. Love is 6’4” while Rodgers is 6’2” and both players weigh exactly 225 pounds. Both have a good frame and incredible arm strength. The longest throw of Love’s career is 88 yards, while the longest of Rodgers’ is 93 yards. The year Rodgers won the Super Bowl, he threw the second-most interceptions of his career, 11. When Rodgers was at his peak, he was a gunslinger-type of a quarterback. He would throw all over the field, taking risks that he felt could pay dividends if they worked. Jordan Love is the same way. He airs the ball out, taking risks for big plays and yes, threw more interceptions than most, but he also had a career year. Love may actually be a younger Rodgers. Rodgers is now a safe and meticulous player, but he still occasionally makes the big throw that is a risk. He’s become more conservative, but still wins due to his incredible talent. The Packers drafting Love and having him learn from Rodgers is the smart move.
Last Word
This is the year the Packers should draft a quarterback. Rodgers’ career is slowly starting to fade and the Packers need to start planning for life after the future Hall of Famer. The New England Patriots didn’t plan for life after Tom Brady. and now they don’t have a plan in place. For a draft loaded with wide receiver talent, taking a quarterback in the first round is the right move. The Packers have put together a defense, and now they need to plan for life after Aaron Rodgers.
