Devin Funchess is off the market. The sixth-year wideout has reportedly agreed to join the Green Bay Packers for the 2020 season, although terms of the deal are not yet public. Funchess spent the 2019 season with the Indianapolis Colts but has also played for the Carolina Panthers.

Devin Funchess Signs With Green Bay Packers

Funchess, a former Michigan standout, spent the first four years of his career with the Panthers, and the results were mixed. Over his first two seasons, his playing time was limited, as the youngster only saw a 45% snap rate. While he showed some flashes of upside, he didn’t receive much opportunity.

But that eventually changed, and without question, his best season came in 2017. As a 23-year-old, he started all 16 games, played 79% of the Panthers’ offensive snaps,  and caught 63 passes for 840 yards and eight touchdowns.

While his tenure with the organization was at times productive, the writing was on the wall when the Panther spent high draft picks on Curtis Samuel and D.J. Moore in the 2017 and 2018 NFL Drafts. In 2018, Funchess saw his snap share decline once again, while he recorded an NFL-worst 13.9% drop rate. Ultimately, he was allowed to test free agency at the end of the season, but in spite of his struggles, his physical talent remained immense.

In 2019, he signed a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts, that was reportedly worth up to $13 million. Unfortunately, he never had a chance to show his new team what he could do, as a broken collarbone ended his season in Week One. Funchess secured three catches for 32 yards in his lone appearance of the campaign.

For Funchess, this new deal provides an opportunity for a fresh start, and a chance to live up to his still-remarkable potential. At only 25, the big-bodied pass-catcher still has plenty of productive football ahead of him, if he can avoid injury and curb his past propensity for drops. The best of Funchess is still likely to come.
