Jeff Driskel Signs With Denver Broncos

Jeff Driskel started a few games for the Lions in 2019 after Matthew Stafford went down with an injury, having four touchdowns and four interceptions.

Quarterback Jeff Driskel has signed a two-year deal with the Denver Broncos worth $5 million. Driskel spent last season with the Detroit Lions.

Driskel was drafted in the sixth round by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2016 NFL Draft. He was brought in to compete for the third string quarterback role with Christian Ponder. He was released by the 49ers prior to the 2016 season. However he was quickly snagged by the Cincinnati Bengals a day later.

Over the next couple of seasons, Driskel became more familiar with the offensive mindset of the struggling Bengals. As the team struggled through injuries and inadequate play at quarterback, Driskel found his way on to the field in 2018. He started the last five games for Cincinnati and had a success statistically. He tossed six touchdowns on 1,003 yards passing along with 130 yards rushing. However that only translated to a single win with the Bengals.

He spent 2019 training camp as a back-up with the Bengals. But was released at the beginning of the season, while on injured reserve. Once again, it did not take long for him to be snatched up.

A week or so into the 2019 season, Driskel signed with the Detroit Lions. After an injury to franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford, Driskel started his first game with the Lions midway in the season. He played in three games, with his most impressive start (207 yards passing and 51 yards rushing with three touchdowns) coming in a loss to the Cowboys. He finished the season on injury reserve and enters the off-season as a free agent.

As a high school senior, Driskel was the Gatorade Football Player of the Year for the state of Florida. He was highly regarded as the top pro-style quarterback of his class. However, success at the prep level did not translate to the field as a member of the Florida Gators. As a Gator, he experienced a tumultuous three years, that had more lows than highs. He was able to rejuvenate his collegiate career at Louisiana Tech prior to entering the 2016 NFL Draft.
