The AFC South title race is coming down to the wire. Both the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans are in a position to win the division. The two teams square off this Sunday in Nashville, then again in Houston in Week 17. For the Texans, this would be their second-straight division title. The Titans haven’t won the division since 2008. Both teams have talented quarterbacks and offenses. This division race will be an interesting one to keep an eye on as the final three weeks of the NFL regular season wind down.
AFC South Title Race: Texans vs Titans
As the NFL regular season comes to a close, the AFC South is one of a few divisions that have yet to be decided. The Titans and Texans are the only two contenders. Both teams face off twice in the final three weeks. Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson is hoping to lead his team to a second straight AFC South title. The Titans haven’t won the division in 11 years. Could this be the year they end the drought?
Houston Texans Division Chances
The Texans currently have the fourth seed in the AFC playoffs. Third-year quarterback Deshaun Watson is seeking to help his team earn another division crown. Head coach Bill O’Brien is trying to show the front office he belongs in Houston. The Texans have played well of late, except for last week against the Denver Broncos. The loss was not as close as the score showed. Two weeks ago, Bradley Roby returned from injury and rose to the occasion. The defense is playing better, but the final three weeks are crucial. If the Texans want a sure lock spot in the playoffs, a win at the Titans this Sunday is a must.
To win their second-straight division crown, Houston has to execute in clutch situations. The defense has to stop Derrick Henry from getting into open space. Also, containing Ryan Tannehill in the pocket is a must.
Tennessee Titans Division Chances
The Titans haven’t won the AFC South since 2008. Is this the year the drought ends? It’s going to take a full team effort for it to come into existence. Tannehill has proven to be a great quarterback once again. Coming in for the benched Marcus Mariota, Tannehill has positioned the Titans in a good situation. A chance at the AFC South title hangs in the balance. But, they have to beat the Texans on Sunday. With both teams facing off twice in the next three weeks, a win this week is critical.
For Tennessee to win the division title, Henry must have another breakout game. The Titans tend to earn wins when Henry rushes well in games. One of the better tailbacks in the league, Henry has established himself as one of the best running backs around. His elusiveness and power runs are a nightmare for opposing defenses.
However, if the Titans are to win their first AFC South division title for the first time since 2008, it will take an all-around effort in the final three regular-season games.
AFC South Title Race Final Thoughts
The AFC South title race is coming down to the wire during the final three games. The Texans are nearly a lock for a playoff spot. Tennessee is on the outside looking in currently. A win on Sunday would bolster the Titans’ chances a bit. But, if they win on Sunday and lose the final game, is it all for naught? This division race will certainly be something to keep an eye on as the regular season comes to a close.
