Scout Talk: Colorado Quarterback Steven Montez
Athletic Ability
Montez is fairly athletic for his size. He’s able to run the option if asked, he can pick up a few yards with his legs on a broken play, but he’ll never be a threat to burn anyone. He will certainly need to work on his coordination as his mechanics falter when on the move.
Competitiveness
Steven was a 2017 All Pac-12 Honorable mention. He is just a gamer that the team seems to rally around. He’s not going to wow anyone with his physical abilities, but he’ll give the team a chance to win.
Mental Alertness
Montez was never asked to read the defense in college. Most of the offense came on predetermined throws. When he did try to go through his progressions, he tends to hold the ball too long risking sacks. On the flip side, when the pocket does collapse, he has a tendency to rush and force the ball in tight windows.
Strength/Explosion
Steven has a big frame that can stand tall in the pocket and take the hits. He’s strong enough to break through arm tackles and can be a decent short-yardage weapon.
Position Skill
Montez possesses above-average arm strength but his deep balls are regularly underthrown. He’s great at short timing routes and has average intermediate accuracy. He holds the ball too low which leaves him vulnerable to strip sacks with his long delivery. His mechanics are questionable and cause him to battle erratic spells, especially when the pocket breaks down and he is forced to scramble. He’ll need to work on his pocket awareness and feeling the rush.
Overall
Steven Montez is a gunslinger in every sense of the word. The problem lies with his decision making and ball security. Mathematically, he grades out as a fifth-round prospect. Unless he can shine during the draft process, I expect Montez to be selected late on day three of the draft. He’ll more than likely be brought in as a camp body with a chance to make a practice squad. Barring injury, Montez shouldn’t see the field outside of the preseason for at least a year or two.
