Nathan Stanley, Quarterback, Iowa
Athletic Ability
Stanley’s lateral quickness and speed is underwhelming, yet somehow he finds a way to break the first tackle, move the pocket and extend the play.
Competitiveness
Nathan is a tough football player that has the will to hang on till the last second to make the throw. He’s experienced decent production while an Iowa, but his inability to consistently finish drives is alarming.
Mental Alertness
Stanley lacks poise under pressure, his mechanics tend to falter the longer a play is extended which causes erratic throws. He has trouble with feeling the rush on a consistent basis. He also holds the ball too long rather than throw it away and takes unnecessary sacks.
Strength/Explosion
Nathan has the big frame that scouts love. His strength helps him take a lot of hits, escape some would-be tacklers, but he needs to learn how to utilize that asset in short-yardage situations.
Position Skill
Stanley has good arm strength but lacks downfield accuracy. His ball placement on short and intermediate throws is sub-par at best. He has a tendency to lock onto receivers and force throws into coverage. While he possesses a quick release, his stagnant feet which take too long to reset, will cause him to be late on throws. Even with his production, the offensive scheme had a lot of predetermined throws, so he never had to work through his progressions.
Overall
Nathan Stanley has the frame and overall arm strength that scouts and general managers covet. However, the pro-style quarterback’s tape shows a different story. He grades out as a 5th round prospect which should be right around where he’ll be taken. Stanley will likely be viewed as a camp body with a chance of leading the practice squad as a rookie, but he’ll need to make some strides to become more than that at the NFL level.
