Kyle Shurmur 2019 NFL Draft Profile
Kyle Shurmur rewrote the record books during his tenure at Vanderbilt. His football I.Q. and game intelligence struck fear into many opponents last season. If Vanderbilt had the roster depth of the other SEC schools, Shurmur would be a household name with an upset of Notre Dame. Yet his lack of supporting cast depth lead to several “almost” wins over ranked teams. As Shurmur settled into Vanderbilt’s offensive system his quarterback rating and stats increased exponentially.
Shurmur was born into an athletic and football-rich family. His dad is a longtime NFL coach, coordinator, and now the head coach of the New York Giants, Pat Shurmur. He taught Kyle the core fundamentals essential to a quarterback, throwing and footwork. Shurmur’s summers as a coach’s kid included throwing passes with Donovan McNabb. As well as attending the Manning’s Passing Camps. Kyle is used to preconceived expectations as the kid of a coach, yet he has no problem standing on his own. Watch any of a multitude of interviews with his Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason and he talks about Kyle’s passion and undeniable work ethic.

Bottom Line
Ultimately, Shurmur has the ideal build and size to be an NFL quarterback. He is fundamentally sound with more game comprehensive game knowledge than most of his counterparts. Shurmur is a strategic passer who will make smart on-field decisions, IF he has the coverage he can trust. His game intelligence and football IQ are exponential. He will need a year or two as a developmental quarterback for any team that picks him up. Shurmur is not a perfect player with some inconsistencies but they are fixable issues with some repetition and practice. He will be an effective team leader on and off the field.
