Browns Part Ways With Safety Derrick Kindred

The Cleveland Browns are expected to place former starting safety Derrick Kindred on the waiver wire on Monday.

The Cleveland Browns are expected to place former starting safety Derrick Kindred on the waiver wire on Monday, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reports. Cleveland is waiving Kindred as he enters a contract year, as the 25-year-old’s contract expires after the 2019 season. Kindred has spent the first three years of his career in Cleveland.

He was slated to be a starter. Cleveland had shopped Kindred, who was due more than $2M in salary. He should generate considerable interest on waivers.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 1, 2019

Derrick Kindred Waived by Browns

The Browns are parting ways with Derrick Kindred, a 2016 fourth-round pick. Kindred has spent the previous three seasons in Cleveland. Kindred appeared in 42 games and recorded 144 total tackles, one forced fumble and two interceptions in three seasons with the Browns. Kindred’s biggest contributions came in 2017, where he started 10 games for the Browns. In 2018, however, Kindred lost the starting role to Jabrill Peppers.

Though he was not a starter last season, this move is rather interesting on Cleveland’s part. The Browns saw Briean Boddy-Calhoun, a primarily rotational player who showed flashes of potential to become a starter, depart for the Houston Texans in free agency. Beyond that, Cleveland traded Peppers, whom Kindred lost his job to, to the New York Giants in exchange for Odell Beckham, Jr.

Losing Boddy-Calhoun, trading Peppers, and now waiving Kindred leaves Damarious Randall as the only formidable player on Cleveland’s safety depth chart. That said, a move like this opens the door for speculation that a separate transaction could be made in the coming days.

Browns general manager John Dorsey stated in a press conference last week that the team has interest in veteran free agent safeties Eric Berry and Tre Boston. Dorsey’s exact words were the Browns have “been in contact” with them. Whether or not waiving Kindred means the Browns have agreed to terms with either Berry or Boston remains to be seen, but it’s reasonable to think that the “contact” between those players and the Browns is slated to result in one of them joining the Browns sooner rather than later.
