Baltimore Ravens running back Alex Collins was placed on injured reserve Saturday morning, effectively ending his season. It’s a disappointing way to end the season after the running back finished with a breakout 2017 season.
Kenneth Dixon Activated From Injured Reserve After Alex Collins Placed On Injured Reserve By Ravens
Alex Collins Placed On Season-Ending IR
Early on in the season, Collins was hampered by a lingering knee issue. In a surprise move, Collins was out-touched by undrafted free agent rookie Gus Edwards in a Week 11 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. For last week’s against the Oakland Raiders, Collins was inactive, listed with a foot injury. In both of those matchups, the Edwards/Lamar Jackson duo led the Baltimore rushing attack very effectively.
A season ago, Collins finished with 973 rushing yards and six touchdowns. His breakout season earned him high marks via Pro Football Focus. However, his prance-and-cut style of running has not amounted to much throughout the 2018 campaign.
This season he’s been largely ineffective, never finishing with more than 68 rushing yards in a game. He did find the end zone seven times on the ground this season, but will finish the 2018 campaign averaging only 3.6 yards-per-carry.
Alex Collins will enter the 2019 season as a restricted free agent.
Kenneth Dixon Activated From IR
In a corresponding move, the Ravens have activated running back Kenneth Dixon from injured reserve.
Dixon injured his knee in the season opener and was designated to return on November 16th. In order to avoid remaining on the IR for the remainder of the season, Dixon had to be added to the active 53-man roster by Friday.
Dixon will join Gus Edwards, Javorius Allen, and recently acquired Ty Montgomery in what is shaping up to be a crowded backfield.
Dixon has a history of injury concerns that have kept him off the field for chunks of time during his three-year career. He profiles as a pass-catching back, which complements the north/south style of running by Edwards. While it’s unclear how much Dixon will be involved immediately upon his return, the Ravens have previously shown that they want to get him touches.
In his only game this season, he totaled 44 yards on 13 touches and had one touchdown.
