Johnson Bademosi, former New England Patriots special teamer, has agreed to terms with the Houston Texans. Bademosi will be joining the team on a two-year contract worth $6.25-million, making him the highest paid special teamer in the league. The Patriots entered the week with 13 free agents. Bademosi is the fifth free agent to leave the team, alongside Danny Amendola, Nate Solder, Malcolm Butler, and Dion Lewis.

This will be Bademosi’s third team in three years. Considering the Patriots depth of talent at special teams and Bill Belichick‘s general distaste for overpaying players, it’s not surprising the Patriots let him go.

In New England, he added some depth to the cornerback rotation but wasn’t as capable as most others. His weakness in the area was especially apparent in Super Bowl LII, when he was absolutely torched by Nelson Agholor:

Bademosi appeared in nearly every game last year, but only played defense in six of his 18 appearances. However, he played over half of New England’s special teams snaps last year. He and Brandon King tied for the team lead in tackles on kickoffs and punt returns.

What can Bademosi offer the Texans?

The Texans special teams unit was ranked 26th last year – just barely ahead of teams such as the New York Giants, Chicago Bears, and the (winless) Cleveland Browns. The Texans ranked dead last in punt return yardage, and nearly 95% of kicks against the team were successful. Bademosi may be no star at cornerback, but he’ll be an asset if he can take New England’s lessons with him.

Additionally, Bademosi will join the new Texans special team coach Brad Seely. Seely was previously the Oakland Raiders special teams coach. He also held the same role with the Patriots between 1998 and 2008. With that kind of talent and leadership, expect to see some big changes coming to Houston’s special teams game next season.
