Zach Brown Agrees to Terms on New Contract With Washington Redskins

Brown entered unrestricted free agency again, just one year after signing a one-year deal with the Washington Redskins worth up to $4.65 million. He has now played with three different teams over the last three seasons.

Brown entered the NFL in the 2012 draft, being selected in the second round (52nd overall) by the Tennessee Titans. After the 2015 NFL season, Brown became an unrestricted free agent. He finished his Titans career with 261 total tackles, 10 sacks, six interceptions, and two touchdowns in 49 games.

On April 4, 2016, the Buffalo Bills signed Brown to a one-year, $1.25 million contract. Brown was initially supposed to back up rookie Reggie Ragland but was forced to start at inside linebacker after Ragland suffered a torn ACL during training camp. Brown finished the 2016 season with a Pro Bowl invite after registering 149 tackles, four sacks, one interception, four passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

Brown’s stats slipped in 2017 with the Redskins, tallying 127 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and zero interceptions.

Before signing with the Redskins in April 2017, Brown had met with several teams including the Bills as well as the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders. Brown likely will garner significant interest again this year, hoping to sign a multi-year contract, something he wasn’t able to do this time last year.

The Redskins are rumored to be interested in re-signing Brown. Head coach Jay Gruden told reporters at the Senior Bowl about Brown:

“I was impressed. … We got a very athletic guy that can run sideline to sideline and make some plays. He got hurt there a little bit at the end of the season unfortunately for him, but he had a solid year. He’s a guy that it’s hard to replace his type of speed. … We’ve got a lot of linebackers there, but we do like Zach Brown’s speed and athleticism.”
