Less than 24 hours after firing personnel executive Sashi Brown, the Cleveland Browns have hired John Dorsey as their new general manager. The hiring was made to give their front office an executive with deep experience in personnel evaluation. Dorsey most recently worked for the Kansas City Chiefs before being fired shortly before the 2017 training camp. During his tenure from 2013-2016 the Chiefs went 43-21, appearing in the playoffs three times. Rumours indicate this is only the beginning of a complete Browns front office restructuring.
Cleveland Browns Hire John Dorsey as General Manager
John Dorsey has been made the Browns full term general manager on Thursday evening. The announcement of Dorsey’s hiring came on the same day the house cleaning began with the firing of Sashi Brown. The Browns 0-12 start ended Brown’s operations in the middle of his second season.
The Dorsey era will begin immediately in the middle of the 2017 season. “We are thrilled to have John Dorsey lead our football operations,” began owner Jimmy Halsam’s statement, “Bringing in someone of John Dorsey’s caliber, his track record of success and his experience, significantly strengthens our opportunities to build a winning football team and that has been, and continues to be, what we want for our fans.”
Dorsey will be looking to turn the Browns around, having built the Chiefs roster by signing all-pro linebacker Justin Houston to a franchise deal, and drafting players such as Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, and Marcus Peters. The Chiefs quarterback, Alex Smith, was also acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in a trade set up by Dorsey.
The experience of Dorsey dates back to working with the Green Bay Packers, when he was promoted to the Director of College Scouting in 1997. He was hired as the Seattle Seahawks Director of Player Personnel in 1999, but rejoined the Packers in 2000 and continue there until Andy Reid hired him as part of the Chiefs staff in 2013.
The Browns will retain head coach Hue Jackson through the 2018 season. Dorsey has already stated his confidence in him, stating, “I am eager to work with Hue, his staff, and our personnel department and help bring us the success these fans so deserve.”
