This Sunday, the Cleveland Browns suffered a disappointing 17-14 loss to the New York Jets. A close loss that included a myriad of crazy things. These include, but are not limited to, the following. The Jets Chandler Catanzaro made a 57-yard field goal to end the first half. Zane Gonzalez, however, couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. Additionally, Kevin Hogan was the best quarterback for the Browns in this game. However, one of the non-crazy things from this game is that the Browns lost to a bad team. Again. This is becoming a problem.
Week Five Cleveland Browns Takeaways
Myles the Monster
On the first defensive series of the game, Myles Garrett came in on third down. On his first career play, he got into the backfield and sacked quarterback Josh McCown. In total, Garrett played only eighteen snaps this past Sunday. Two of those snaps were sacks.
Okay, fine, it was against the Jets. Okay, fine, he was somewhat fresh after sitting out the first four games of the season with injury. However, this still has to count for something. If Garrett plays like this for the rest of the year, or his career, Browns fans could be in for a treat. As long as Garrett can stay healthy, he will be the silver lining for the Browns. Myles Garrett has arrived, and every quarterback that the Browns face had better be on notice.
Hogan’s Heroes?
A debatable decision, Hue Jackson made the decision to sit DeShone Kizer in the second half. Of course, that meant that Kevin Hogan would come in to try to win the game. At that time, the Browns were only down by three. And of course, Hogan led the Browns right down the field for a touchdown and their first lead of the year. Was there ever any doubt?
For the rest of the game, Hogan at least managed the game at least somewhat well. He completed a staggering 84.2% of his passes for two touchdowns. He did throw one interception, which led to the dagger Jets score. However, he did show that maybe he can be a starter in the NFL. Whether Hogan is or is not the hero for the Browns, he could start next week against the Houston Texans.
Addition By Subtraction
Wide receiver Kenny Britt did not play in this game. Earlier in the week, he was ruled out with a groin injury. And yet, the Browns wide receiver corps did not seem to suffer. Judging on the eye test alone, the receivers seemed to have an easier time catching both Kizer and Hogan’s passes. Whether or not this is coincidence or has any significance, we’re not exactly sure. But one thing is for sure: for one game, this receiver corps looked marginally better without the services, or lack thereof, of Kenny Britt.
Should You Turn On Hue Jackson?
No. Of course, everyone’s patience is beginning to wear thin with the current Browns coach. But then again, what else is new? At the very least, Jimmy Haslam should be giving Hue Jackson until the end of the year. But if the Browns finish 1-15 once again, like Hue promised they wouldn’t, it may just be time for a change. After all, Jackson did mention that he would be “swimming in that lake over there” if he went 1-15 ever again. Please, Browns. Keep Hue dry.
