Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan will be suspended for two games after a devastating hit landed Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams in the hospital. The hit on Thursday Night Football drew immediate scrutiny, extrapolated by scare as Adams was carried off the field on a stretcher. Trevathan will be eligible to return to the Bears roster on Monday, October 16, however, he could return sooner if his appeal succeeds.
Danny Trevathan Suspended for Illegal Hit on Davante Adams
The suspension came down on Saturday afternoon from NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan to suspended Trevathan two games for after reviewing a hit many saw as illegal and dirty. Despite Trevathan’s immediate remorse, he will miss the Bears game against the Minnesota Vikings and the Baltimore Ravens.
Packers receiver Adams, fortunately, is doing well after the hit. He was released from the hospital on Friday afternoon, offering a Tweet of thanks for the prayers and reassurance he was, “At home feeling great.” Head coach Mike McCarthy stated that Adams will be entering concussion protocol until further notice.
The initial repercussion for the hit was a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty. However, popular sentiment was adamant that Trevathan should have been ejected from the game. Prayers rose not only from fans, but NFL colleagues joined in as former Fresno State teammate, and Oakland Raiders quarterback, Derek Carr and Detroit Lions tackle Akeem Spence tweeted. The Packers went on to win the Thursday night game 35-14.
Trevathan will appeal the two-game suspension immediately, to be heard by either counselor Derrick Brooks or James Thrash. During Trevathan’s time gone, second-year linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski or Christian Jones will be the most likely replacement. Trevathan had racked up 29 tackles through four games, and is attempting his first full season of health for the Bears after missing seven games in 2016.
