Late news about Malik McDowell arrived from the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The rookie defensive end was injured in an ATV accident during the off-season and is currently recovering at home. The 2017 second round pick from Michigan State has done nothing but set his training, development, and improvements back farther for each day he has missed.

Malik McDowell Injured From ATV Accident
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and James Palmer, McDowell suffered a concussion and facial injuries in the accident. His timetable for return is unknown, but McDowell delivered assurance on Twitter:
“I appreciate all the concern regarding my health. I just want to clear the air. I am doing well and expect to rejoin my teammates in Seattle in the next few days. My injury is not life or career threatening as some have speculated. I am grateful for the support I have received from the Seahawks organization, my doctors and my family. You will see me back on the field in the near future.”
Steal?
The injury itself may not be all that bad, but McDowell has missed critical time with the team. After an inconsistent college career, the rookie desperately needs to hone his skills, catch up with NFL speed, and learn from the excellent defenders and coaches surrounding him. Tales of his work ethic and laziness spread before the draft in April. At the same time, his physical gifts make him an exceptional talent and the Seahawks took him in the second round of the draft.
The 6’6″, 300 pound defensive tackle expected to contribute as an interior pass rusher, and eventually earn the starter role. Unfortunately, McDowell hasn’t even proven he can handle the main reserve spot. With 40 days left until kickoff, he will have about a month to impress the team and coaches enough.
Bad Decisions = Bad Careers
Head coach Pete Carroll was impressed with the work McDowell put in during spring camps, but the accident caused an unnecessary setback. Every day that McDowell misses adds to the missed training that would have spurred his process along. Although it may seem non-threatening now, McDowell’s decision can still hurt his career. The immaturity issues for a player who is otherwise extremely talented continue to persist.
