On Monday afternoon, the Denver Broncos extended the contract of general manager, John Elway by five years. Since becoming the general manager, the Broncos are 67-29, and have appeared in two Super Bowls. As of writing this, the contract details haven’t been released, but it’s believed that the team will make him the NFL’s highest paid general manager.

There are very few human beings in NFL history that mean as much to a franchise as John Elway does to the Denver Broncos. He won two Super Bowls as the team’s starting quarterback, and he’s added another as a general manager. Elway played a crucial role in signing Peyton Manning, who had the greatest passing season in NFL history as a Bronco.
As well as luring big free agents like DeMarcus Ware, Peyton Manning, and Wes Welker to Denver, Elway has proven to be a good drafter as well. His first draft pick was Von Miller, arguably the NFL’s best defensive player, and easily a top three pass rusher. Since then, he’s also drafted Derek Wolfe, Malik Jackson, Danny Trevathan, Bradley Roby, and others.

It was very important for the Denver Broncos to extend Elway, especially in the state the AFC West is in. Derek Carr and the Oakland Raiders are one of the NFL’s hottest young teams, the Kansas City Chiefs are the best coached team outside of New England, and Joey Bosa‘s Los Angeles Chargers are better than you might think. The Broncos need to make sure that the right man is making the big decisions if they want to keep up.
The next big question for the Denver Broncos is simple. Who will start at quarterback? Brock Osweiler wasn’t the guy, Paxton Lynch hasn’t panned out, and Trevor Siemian is mediocre at best. However, with this contract, Elway will have plenty of time to find his next passer.
