Houston Texans Running Back D’Onta Foreman Arrested

Former Longhorn and third roun pick for the Texans, running back D'Onta Foreman was arrested early Sunday morning on campus at his alma mater.

At approximately 3:00am Sunday morning, July 16, 2017, Houston Texans running back D’Onta Foreman was arrested for possession of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

According to the University of Texas Police Department, officers responded to a call around 12:24am. The call was a report of the scent of marijuana coming from three vehicles on campus. Upon arriving to San Jacinto residence hall, the officers discovered marijuana in all three vehicles.

A firearm was also discovered in one of them, which belonged to Foreman. The former Longhorn running back and six other suspects were taken into custody. The marijuana possession charges carried a $1,000 bond. The unlawful carry of a firearm charge carried a $3,500 bond. Foreman made bail and was released sometime around noon.

This news comes not even a month after Foreman signed a contract with the Houston Texans. The Texans agreed with Foreman on a four-year deal worth $3.259 million on June 17th. Foreman entered this year’s draft after an impressive junior year with Texas. The running back finished the season with 2,028 yards on 323 carries with 15 touchdowns. His impressive season was enough to earn him the Doak Walker Award, as well as the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

While the Texans are not issuing a comment at this moment, we can only wonder what this spells for Foreman’s future with the team. Heading into training camp, he appeared to be a possible backup to Lamar Miller. At the very least, he should’ve easily been the number three back but that’s uncertain after this incident.

A Second Chance?

Jaelen Strong, also a former third round pick, went through a similar situation last season. Strong was arrested on marijuana possession charges in February of last year. He didn’t see a lot of playing time on the field but the Texans did give Strong a second chance.

With the addition of the firearm charge to Foreman, a suspension is likely looming from the NFL. Foreman is probably looking at a four-game suspension (that seems to be the policy on first-time offenders). As far as punishment from the Texans, it will likely come in the form of limited playing time. Look for Alfred Blue to continue his role as backup to Miller with Tyler Ervin as the number three back.
