The Cleveland Browns Should Not Draft Mitchell Trubisky First Overall

The Cleveland Browns should not draft Mitchell Trubisky first overall. The thought of him being in that discussion is absolutely insane.

According to Adam Schefter, the Cleveland Browns are torn between two on who to draft first overall. Those two are Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett and North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

There’s something wrong with the above sentence. Trubisky doesn’t belong in talks about the first overall pick. The Cleveland Browns shouldn’t draft Mitchell Trubisky with the first pick.

The Cleveland Browns Should Not Draft Mitchell Trubisky First Overall

Trubisky is the Jared Goff of the 2016 NFL Draft. He has had one good performance and he is being way overhyped. Trubisky started just 13 games in his entire collegiate career. Some of the other quarterbacks in this class have won more than that.

To many experts, Trubisky is the best quarterback in this draft. However, Deshaun Watson and Pat Mahomes show more potential than he does. Trubisky doesn’t even look like a first round quarterback, possibly not even a second-rounder.

Cleveland Ruins Careers

Not only would Cleveland drafting Trubisky first overall be bad for the team. It would be bad for him, as well. Cleveland’s NFL organization is where quarterbacks careers go to die or not even begin.

Quarterbacks such as Jake Delhomme, Colt McCoy, and Kevin Hogan have had their NFL careers negatively impacted by the Browns. Delhomme led the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2004. He did nothing exciting in Cleveland.

McCoy was a great quarterback at Texas. When he was drafted by the Browns, everyone forgot who he was until he was signed by the Washington Redskins.

Coming out of Stanford, Hogan was compared to some of the NFL greats. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs and it was presumed he could do well should Alex Smith be injured. Unfortunately, Hogan never got that shot. He was traded to the Browns shortly after, riding the bench the entire 2016 season.

The point being made here is that Trubisky shouldn’t want to be drafted by the Browns. If he wants to prove himself worthy, he should want to do it with a team that will not ruin his NFL career before it begins.

Go Get Garrett

The rumor has been proven true the last several years. Defense does in fact win championships. The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII based on defense. When the New England Patriots beat the Seahawks the following year, defense played a major role in clinching the title.

Denver beat the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 based on their defensive performance. A defensive play by Dont’a Hightower sparked the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history back in February when the Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons.

It’s highly unlikely the Cleveland Browns will make the playoffs in 2017, let alone win the Super Bowl. However, drafting a quarterback who is mediocre at best isn’t the best way to start off a “rebuild.”

Fixing up the defense is the best way to start off a new era in Browns football. Garrett has shown that he could be a great piece to the puzzle for Cleveland. He is a fast pass rusher, which would be a threat for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco.

Trubisky being in talks for the first overall pick is insane. If the Browns draft him first overall on April 27, they will show everyone that they are truly the Cleveland Browns.
