It was well documented that the quarterback position for the New York Jets was chaotic in 2016 to say the least. The Jets probably had one of the worst quarterback situations in recent years. Chaos, disorganization, and low morale have almost become synonymous when thinking of this organization. Overall the team has certainly not performed to the expectations that the fans have levied on them. Here is the breakdown of what went wrong with the quarterback position.
New York Jets Quarterbacks End of Season Review
Where Was the Consistency?
The great organizations have one thing in common: a well put together front office, and consistency at the quarterback position. The Jets, arguably at least have the front office portion, but by no means are consistent at quarterback. The last time they had any semblance of stability at the position was when Mark Sanchez was under center in 2009. Since then, multiple players have been under center, all at times flashing potential but inevitably succumbing to mediocrity. Ryan Fitzpatrick was the latest player to tease fans with flashes of brilliance, almost leading the team back to the playoffs. This earned himself a hefty payday, but one year later he was absolutely atrocious earning himself the scorn of the fans.
In terms of grading the consistency of the quarterback position for the Jets, the answer is blatantly obvious. While it was not a failure simply due to the fact that we got to see sophomore Bryce Petty play, and what he is capable of, it was not an achievement either. The Jets earn a solid “C” grade for their efforts to overcome the lack of consistency.
At the End of the Day, It’s All About the Play
While consistency at quarterback and front office competency are major factors for teams to emerge as contenders, there is one factor that truly determines everything at the end of the day. It all comes down to the number of points that are up on the scoreboard. If you don’t score, you don’t win. It’s a simple concept that someone should probably mention to the Jets. Their offense was one of the lowest scoring units in the league. As overall play is concerned, the lack of effort and heart that was shown at times, they earned a grade of “D”. You reap what you sow and what transpired in 2016 was a clear example for the Jets.
One simple thing the Jets could do in order to boost their ranking among other NFL teams is to go out and sign and quarterback. The draft class, at least for the pick the Jets hold most likely will not yield someone who can take over right away and be productive. The Jets need to go out there and sign someone who can make an immediate impact. One name that will be swirling around the rumor mill is Tony Romo. While he has not named the Jets as a contender among his personal preference, the Jets most likely will make a run at him. The team needs someone who can come in and immediately put points on the board and take charge of this floundering team.
