Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson declared for the 2017 NFL Draft after he and the Tigers won the College Football Playoff National Championship.
“Whoever picks me up a gonna get a champion, not just on the field, but off the field, and just a champion at heart who’ll make people around him better,” he told Scott Van Pelt. “I’m just gonna go to work, and regardless of my situation or where I go, I’m gonna play my role and do the best I can do.”
Watson may want to watch what he says. He can do the best he can do for sure, but he shouldn’t want to get picked by the wrong team.
Deshaun Watson Should Be Hoping to Avoid Cleveland Browns
The 2017 NFL Draft will be held from April 27 – April 29 in Philadelphia. Watson will more likely than than not be drafted on the first day, if not in the first round. Hopefully, for his sake, he won’t be picked first overall.
Cleveland Browns Down
The Cleveland Browns own the first overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Many are speculating that after Monday night’s game, Cleveland will be looking at him at their top pick. They may want to hold off on that.
Watson has shown that he is not completely NFL-ready. He has had many struggles during the 2016 season. Watson was a big part of getting the Tigers to the last two national titles, but he was not the biggest part. That would belong to head coach Dabo Swinney.
Watson got to the national title and did well under a good coach in Swinney. With the Browns, there is no good coaching staff on that team at all. If Cleveland were to draft him, he would be playing under a nonexistent coaching staff and wouldn’t be able to replicate what he did at Clemson.
Many mock drafts have Watson going elsewhere other than Cleveland. The New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers are two other teams draft experts feel Watson would be a good fit under.
There’s a third team in the mix, however. That third team would be a perfect fit for Watson in the NFL – the Chicago Bears.
Bear Up
Many want to blame the Bears failures on head coach John Fox. However, he doesn’t deserve any of the blame. Fox isn’t succeeding in Chicago because Jay Cutler is his quarterback.
Alshon Jeffery is the key player to their offense. He is a great receiver when given targets. The other receiver on the Bears, Kevin White, hasn’t had much of a chance, either. He has played just five games in his NFL career. He caught 19 passes for 187 yards in those five games.
Another problem in Chicago is their running game. Their leading rusher, Jordan Howard, only scored six touchdowns for the Bears. With a complete healthy team, Fox could take the Bears to the playoffs.
He proved that with the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos. He took the Panthers to the playoffs as a one seed multiple times and took Denver to the Super Bowl in 2014.
Watson could help out Chicago in many ways. He’s a very good passer given the right receivers and he could help in the running game.
Watson looks like he could be the next Dak Prescott. He could make plays with both his arms and his legs. If he wants to succeed in the NFL like he did in college, he’ll want to avoid Cleveland and call Chicago home.
