The New England Patriots have claimed wide receiver Michael Floyd off of waivers from the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals released Floyd on Wednesday after he was arrested for DUI Monday.
New England Patriots Claim Michael Floyd Off Waivers
According to ProFootballTalk, the Patriots got Floyd because no other team would sign him. That is based on the NFL’s waiver system, which began after the trade deadline.
The Cardinals drafted him with the 13th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. He was also arrested for a DUI while in college. Arizona ignored the DUI and still drafted him in the first round.
In 2016, Floyd caught 33 passes for 446 yards and four touchdowns. The four touchdowns is just two away from tying his career high. He caught six touchdown passes in 2014 and 2015. His rookie contract expires after this season. The Patriots will have the choice to let him exercise free agency or re-sign him to a deal.
The addition of Floyd to the Patriots helps them a lot as they look to clinch the top spot in the AFC and a playoff berth. Tight end Rob Gronkowski is out for the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his lower back. While Brady has other great receivers, Gronk was his biggest target and the team’s most valuable.
The Patriots have also been playing without wide receiver Danny Amendola. He has been battling a right ankle injury. Floyd could replace Amendola for the time being.
Getting Floyd just gives New England another target in which they can threaten opposing defenses. This will also help Floyd out. Floyd will be catching more passes and could possibly find the end zone several more times this season. He could wind up having a career year.
The Patriots are currently in first place in the AFC East and are tied for the best record in the NFL at 11-2.
