Tony Romo might have played his last game in Dallas. Dak Prescott has taken over as the Dallas Cowboys quarterback and Jerry Jones has made that clear so far. Prescott has lead this Cowboys team to a first place lead in the NFC with a record of 7-1, so what happens next in this saga?
Tony Romo’s Days as Dallas Cowboys Quarterback are Likely Over
Jones has already intimated that when Romo is healthy and ready to play, it is not certain that he will be getting the ball back. With Prescott as the new face behind this Cowboys offense, Jones is likely ready to take the approach of in with the new and out with the old.
Romo has been a part of this Dallas Cowboys team his entire career. Romo went undrafted in 2003, and then signed as a free agent with the team. After a few years as a place holder, Romo took over at quarterback for Drew Bledsoe. After becoming the Cowboys’ starter in 2006, he retained the role all the way up to 2016. With a few injury plagued seasons and a handful of disappointing playoff appearances on his resume, his tenure has been less than ideal.
Prescott is the Future
Dak Prescott is what Dallas Cowboys fans have been waiting for. They finally have a young, powerful quarterback who is ready to lead this franchise to a winning season and hopefully, a lengthy playoff run. With all of the moving parts on this team, he has everything the franchise needs to build for the future.
In 2006, Romo’s first year atop the depth chart, he made ten regular season starts, winning six of them and leading the team to a 9-7 record in the process. The Cowboys would ultimately lose their first playoff appearance in three years that season. Prescott is now 7-1, and on his way to leading the team to their first playoff appearance since 2014. This young quarterback is willing and ready to be the head of this team for years to come.
What happens to Romo?
With that said, I do not believe Tony Romo has played his last game in the NFL. He can still be a better than average quarterback if he is given the right tools. Romo is 36 years old. This means that he may have a few decent years left in him. This is the perfect opportunity for a rebuilding team. You have an above average quarterback that you can hopefully count for the next two years, and during that time you can train your future quarterback under him.
Romo could be a great leader for a young up-and-coming quarterback that is looked at as the future of a franchise. It is too late for Prescott; he is already in charge and looking good in the NFL, but imagine if Lamar Jackson of the Louisville Cardinals got drafted in the top three. Whoever selected him could go out and get Romo. Jackson, being a sophomore, would get to learn under Romo for two years as the team rebuilds around him. When the two years are over, you now have an experienced quarterback who is ready to take over a newly rebuilt team.
Romo has definitely not thrown his last football in the NFL. He may still get the chance to play with the Dallas Cowboys one last time, but his days as the team’s starting quarterback are over. Next season will likely be the first time in over ten years that Romo will not be on the sidelines for this team.
