Houston Texans Week Seven Takeaways

It was a rough return to Denver for Quarterback Brock Osweiler, and his new team, the Houston Texans. The pressure for him to perform has never been greater

It was a rough return to Denver for Brock Osweiler and the Houston Texans. Osweiler and the offense could not get anything going all night. Meanwhile, the Texans defensive line is clearly missing J.J. Watt, as they were unable to get any pressure on Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian. Losing the game 27-9, the Texans have a lot of work to do.

Houston Texans Week Seven Takeaways

The offensive struggles of the Houston Texans continued Monday night. Quarterback Brock Osweiler became the first quarterback in league history to have three games in a single season with 200 or fewer yards, on 40 attempts in each game. He had a handful of terrible throws, including one where he fumbled the ball without being touched by a defender. However, besides Osweiler, there were some positives for the Texans offense. Despite playing the blitz happy Broncos, the Texans offensive line did not allow a sack all night. Even after right tackle Derek Newton went down with an injury, back up Chris Clark stepped in and played well.

On the defensive side of the ball, there were a few positive takeaways, but mainly negative ones. Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian faced no pressure all night as the Texans defense finished with zero sacks. They also struggled to stop the run, as the Broncos running-backs finished with 190 yards rushing on the night.  On the positive side, cornerback A.J. Bouye looked excellent in coverage. With Kevin Johnson out for the remainder of the season, Bouye’s performance was a pleasant surprise. Andre Hal, the Texans seventh round draft pick from the 2014 draft, also had another solid outing. When Kevin Johnson returns next season, this Texan’s secondary could make the leap to elite status.

The Texans return home for week eight as they take on Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions. Kickoff is at 1:00pm EST and the game will be broadcast on FOX.
