Week three in the NFL continues to see injuries pile up. Most of the injuries are mild at best, and present no long-term effects, but a few are significantly more severe. Major storylines after week three include injured running backs. Listed below include teams and their players affected by injuries heading into week four.
Week Three in the NFL Continues to See the Injuries Pile Up
New York Giants – running back Rashad Jennings
Jennings (Thumb) has a chance of returning for Monday Night Football in week four when the Minnesota Vikings host the New York Giants.
Seattle Seahawks – quarterback Russell Wilson
An MRI on Monday confirmed that Wilson suffered an MCL sprain in his left knee. Head coach Pete Carroll said that he all but expects to Wilson play in week four against the New York Jets, as long as he plays with a brace on his knee. He did reluctantly concede that the Seahawks may opt to rest him.
New York Giants – running back Shane Vereen
Backup running back and third down specialist, Vereen, is expected to miss the entire 2016 season with a triceps injury that requires immediate surgery, the team announced on Monday. With Jennings return in week four in doubt, and Vereen lost for the season, it looks like backup Orleans Darkwa and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back, Bobby Rainey, may get some significant carriers.
Seattle Seahawks – running back Thomas Rawls
Seahawks running back Thomas Rawls will miss “a few more weeks” due to an injured fibula, Carroll confirmed on Monday. Even though it wasn’t confirmed by the team, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Rawls suffered a hairline fracture.
Chicago Bears – running back Jeremy Langford
Against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, Langford suffered a sprained ankle, a source told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. It was originally feared that Langford had sustained an Achilles injury. The Bears second year pro rushed for 31 yards on three carries prior to leaving the game. If Langford is unable to go, then rookie Jordan Howard would get the nod.
Miami Dolphins – running back Arian Foster
Dolphins head coach Adam Gase strongly suggested that Foster could use one more week to heal from a groin injury that forced him to miss week three against the Cleveland Browns.
San Diego Chargers – linebacker Manti Te’o
Te’o suffered a torn Achilles in the Chargers 26-22 loss against the Indianapolis Colts, and will miss the entire 2016 season, a source told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport after an MRI on Monday confirmed the injury. This would be just another devastating injury to the Chargers who have lost both wide receiver Keenan Allen and running back Danny Woodhead for the season.
