Denver Broncos, Wide Receiver Emmanuel Sanders Agree to Three-Year, $33 Million Contract Extension
NBC 9 (Denver) reported yesterday that the two sides were not far apart from reaching an agreement. The only disagreement was how the contract was to be structured. Before the extension was finalized, Sanders was entering the final year of a three-year deal he signed back in March 2014.
Sanders had a career year in 2014, his first with Denver. He recorded 101 receptions for 1,404 yards and nine touchdowns. Sanders caught 76 passes 1,135 yards and six touchdowns in 2015. The Broncos finished the season 11-5 last season and went on to defeat the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50.
Back in 2013, Sanders signed an offer sheet with the New England Patriots. His former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, matched the Patriots’ offer. After the 2013 season, Sanders joined the Broncos in free agency.
Sanders was drafted by the Steelers in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
The Broncos and Panthers will meet at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver on Thursday night in a Super Bowl 50 rematch to kick off the 2016 NFL season. Quarterback Peyton Manning, who was with the Broncos last season, retired after winning the Super Bowl.
The Broncos have announced that 2015 seventh round pick Trevor Siemian will start against the Panthers Thursday. He beat out veteran Mark Sanchez and 2016 first round pick Paxton Lynch for the starting quarterback job.
The Broncos’ leading receiver in 2015, Demaryius Thomas, is signed with Denver through the 2019 season. This means that the Broncos wide receiving corp could be one of the best in the league over the next several seasons.
If the Broncos win the Super Bowl, they will be the first repeat champions since the Patriots in 2003 and 2004.
