Oliver Rowland Reveals Plans During Formula E Break

Oliver Rowland’s win in Jeddah cemented his Formula E championship leader position, showcasing the impressive form of Nissan’s powertrain. While the Formula E season will face a one-month break, he stays busy mentoring young talents.

Oliver Rowland’s Strong Start to the Season

Oliver Rowland’s victory in the second Jeddah race was a redemption after the disappointment of the previous day when he lost the win despite leading most of the race due to an energy management issue.

The Nissan powertrain has been performing well, allowing him to fight at the front in every race.

However, in qualifying, Taylor Barnard was four-tenths quicker on Saturday in his NEOM McLaren with the same powertrain.

When we asked Rowland about the gap he acknowledged that but emphasized that Barnard had made a significant step forward with his confidence.

“Taylor [Baranrd] made a good step overnight, and he was probably the reference in terms of speed. I knew I had to put it all on the table to beat him. I took some big risks and made mistakes, which exaggerated the gap.” – Oliver Rowland speaking to LWOS.

Reviewing the session afterward, Rowland noted that their performance was nearly identical before Turn 10, where he lost the rear.

Despite this, he remains confident in his ability to extract the maximum from the car, knowing that the team has a strong package across different circuits.

Maximizing the Break: Staying Sharp for Miami

Formula E now enters a month-long break before the Miami E-Prix, a rare pause in the fast-paced championship.

While some drivers might struggle with the downtime, Rowland embraces it as an opportunity to stay active and refine his approach. His schedule is packed with simulator work, trips to Italy and Barcelona to mentor his junior drivers.

Indeed, Oliver Rowland’s commitment to motorsport extends beyond his own racing career. During this long break from Formula E, he remains heavily involved in developing young talent, mentoring drivers in the junior categories.

One of them is Arvid Lindblad, a rising star set to make his Formula 2 debut with Campos. Rowland was by his side during recent F2 testing, offering guidance and support.

Balancing his own championship fight with this mentoring role keeps him just as busy off-track, proving his dedication to the sport goes far beyond his own success.

He sees the break as a welcome reset, giving him a chance to step back from the immediate pressure of racing while remaining engaged with Nissan’s development.

The Pit Boost Factor: A New Challenge in Formula E

One of the most talked-about changes this season has been the introduction of the pit boost. Rowland sees it as a game-changer, altering the way races are managed.

“Less of a focus on saving energy, let’s say, and more of a focus on being fast, pushing hard, and trying to build gaps in certain phases of the race.” – Rowland on the pit boost.

While it added complexity by requiring teams to execute a pit stop and adjust their strategy, he actually found it made energy management easier. The extra element of decision-making brought a fresh challenge that he enjoyed, making races more dynamic.

“For me, it actually brought an extra element of complexity because we had to handle strategy and we had to handle doing the actual pit stop, but it actually made the race a bit easier in terms of energy saving.”

Rowland believes that the pit boost encourages a more aggressive and engaging style of racing.

“I enjoyed it, I thought it was a good addition, and I’m interested to see where it takes the racer.”

Looking ahead, he’s eager to see how pit boost continues to evolve and influence the competition.

Full Focus on Miami

With his victory in Jeddah and a strong points lead in the championship, Oliver Rowland is proving to be a serious title contender.

Nissan’s pace has been consistently strong, and with further refinements during the break, the British driver is ready to attack in Miami.
