Alabama's A-Day Scrimmage

A-Day Recap: QB Battle Takes Center Stage

Alabama wrapped up its Spring with the annual A-Day game, offering a clearer look at where the team stands in the offseason. While it didn’t answer every question, it did provide insight into several key areas, starting with the quarterback competition.

Quarterback Battle Takes Center Stage

Keelon Russell showed poise and control throughout his reps, standing out among the quarterbacks. He operated the offense with confidence and took advantage of opportunities downfield when they were there, going 20/32 for 229 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. Head coach Kalen DeBoer hasn’t officially named a starter yet, so the competition remains open, but Russell arguably looked like the most comfortable option on the field.
There were still inconsistencies across the group, and a spring game can only show so much. Regardless, Russell’s performance gives hope in a guy recruited by DeBoer, and something to build on at the position.

Explosive Plays Highlight, Inconsistency Lingers

The rest of the offense showed flashes in the passing game. Freshman wide receiver Cederian Morgan sparked conversation across social media. Morgan showed his ability to track the ball and stretch the field in a deep reception, one of the biggest plays of the day.
At the same time, the offense struggled to sustain drives. There were clear efforts to improve situational football, especially in the red zone. While potential was shown, it was clear there are still a handful of things to get figured out before game 1 in September.
The run game remains a work in progress. Daniel Hill had 32 yards on 10 carries, while Rico Scott went for 28 yards on just three carries. Three-star newcomer Trae’Shawn Brown showed promise, taking his five carries for 25 yards.
No one took the top off, but as a group, they seemed encouraging. Still, the Crimson Tide running backs were unable to establish a steady rhythm on the ground. Fixing this will likely be an important task for the offense during the offseason.

New Faces Flash Early

Several newcomers made noticeable contributions Saturday, giving a glimpse of what Alabama’s future could look like. Cederian Morgan’s deep catch was the highlight, but his impact went beyond that one play, with three catches for 74 yards and one touchdown.
NC State transfer Noah Rogers had an early five-yard reception from Austin Mack on the opening drive. His afternoon ended early after taking a hard hit, leading to him being carted off. Rogers was later seen wearing a brace and is now expected to miss the beginning of the season, according to coach DeBoer.
True Freshman Jorden Edmonds showed his ability to make an impact on defense with a forceful tackle on Rico Scott, a near interception on a pass from Keelon Russell, and another pass break-up later in the scrimmage.

Defense Shows Playmaking Ability

Defensively, there were encouraging signs. The unit generated pressure throughout the scrimmage and forced turnovers, including interceptions from Dijon Lee Jr. and Dre Kirkpatrick Jr. While they weren’t dominant the whole game, they showed the ability to disrupt plays and capitalize on mistakes.
As is often the case, the defense appeared to be slightly ahead, with notable effort and playmaking.

Kicking Battle Worth Watching

Special Teams added an under-the-radar storyline with a kicking competition. After Connor Talty’s late-season struggles last year, Alabama turned to the transfer portal, adding former Marshall kicker Lorcan Quinn. Quinn displayed a strong leg and connected on multiple attempts over 45 yards. Talty showed signs of offseason development, but struggled with a miss on a 38-yard attempt.

Final Takeaways

Overall, A-day gave fans a glimpse of a team still coming together. The quarterback competition will be a national headline throughout the offseason, with Russell making a strong first impression. The offense showed explosive potential, with flickers of inconsistency. As for the defense, the playmaking ability and aggression are there, but the execution is a work in progress.
Alabama has a foundation in place as the offseason continues, but several key areas will need to improve before the season begins.
