Two Ole Miss Staff Members Depart As Season Approaches

The Ole Miss football program has seen historic levels of success over the past few seasons. With that success comes new challenges. And they are now facing one of those challenges at the worst possible time. With training camp mere weeks away, two Rebel staff members from the player development side are set to leave, moving on to other ventures. At this point in the offseason, losing one staff member would be bad enough. Losing two essentially counts as entering the realm of “worst case scenario.”

The immediate question with this news is how this impacts the upcoming season on the field. But the indirect question is what the future of the program now looks like. Does this have a lasting impact on one of the most successful periods in program history? Or does it prove to be nothing more than a slight blip on the radar moving forward?

Worst Case Scenario For the Rebels?

Kelvin Bolden Joins Staff at Rival LSU

The first departure came from the Coordinator of Recruiting Strategy, Kelvin Bolden. After spending three years in Oxford, Bolden now heads to LSU in an elevated role, becoming the Tigers’ assistant general manager and senior associate athletic director.

In his three seasons with the Rebels, he served as the primary in-state recruiter for Ole Miss. A few names he managed to land include Caleb Cunningham, Suntarine Perkins, and Kam Franklin. All of those still remain on the roster at Ole Miss. These signings were pivotal in the Rebels ultimately finishing with multiple top-20 high school recruiting classes in his three seasons in Oxford. Under his guidance, the 2026 class was also taking really good shape, with many thinking it could prove to be another top-20 class.

Just about everyone understands Bolden’s decision to head south to Baton Rouge. It’s an upgrade in title and pay. For Ole Miss fans, that doesn’t make his departure any easier to deal with. Although the move is understandable, the fact that it comes at the hands of a bitter rival is yet another tough pill to swallow regarding the situation.

Alex Brown Is NFL-bound

As mentioned earlier, the bad news doesn’t stop with Bolden’s departure from Oxford. Director of Player Personnel, Alex Brown, is also leaving the program. Brown is NFL-bound, as he’s set to take on a role in the Atlanta Falcons’ scouting department.

Despite only being at Ole Miss for one season, Brown was a huge part of the Rebels pulling in the number one transfer portal recruiting class in 2024. Prior to his brief stint in Oxford, he held the role of Head of Scouting at SMU since 2022. Somewhat ironically, Brown ultimately landed at Ole Miss because he was taking over the role of Austin Thomas. Ultimately, Thomas also joined Brian Kelly at LSU, similar to the move Bolden just made.

To this point, Kiffin hasn’t publicly commented on the staff departures. However, with SEC Media Days coming up next week, don’t be surprised if it gets brought up in Atlanta.

All Eyes on Kiffin To Name Rebel Staff Replacements

With the departures, Kiffin now finds himself under a new, slightly unexpected, microscope. While no stranger to criticism, this stretch is one of the first times that he’s seen numerous staff members bail nearly simultaneously. The good news is that he’s proven to be solid at finding solid replacements. However, can he and his staff do so can do so with numerous positions, at essentially the same time?

The other issue is the rapidly approaching start of training camp and the season. Clearly, success during the season comes first. But putting yourself in a position to be successful moving forward is also vitally important. In the new age of college athletics, recruiting has become a year-round job. It’s not just focused on after the season. The departures of Brown and Bolden likely won’t affect much on the field this season. But losing two pieces of your recruiting staff has the potential to be a hindrance to the program for years to come.

If Kiffin can find these replacements quickly, most will forget this week ever happened. However, if the replacements take time or ultimately struggle, this brief stretch may well prove to be one of the toughest weeks of his stint at Ole Miss, which is now entering year six.
