Oregon recruiting has been on a legendary tear this summer. On Saturday it was official. The latest commit for Oregon, Trey McNutt, is one of the top defenders in the 2025 recruiting class. McNutt represents the second five-star recruit in Oregon’s 15-man 2025 recruiting class and the first safety of the class. He chose the Ducks over Texas A&M, USC, Florida, and Ohio State.
He’s the ninth Oregon commit since June 1 and comes a month after Dakorian Moore, the top wide receiver in the class, committed. In its current rankings, 247Sports considers McNutt as the top safety in the nation and the second-best player from Ohio.

Trey McNutt Commits to the Oregon 2025 Recruiting Class
Oregon’s latest recruiting win over Ohio State was a massive one. McNutt is the son of former Ohio State defensive back, Richard McNutt (1999-2002).
As a recruit, McNutt is considered to be a future high NFL draft pick. He has played safety and corner for his Shaker Heights team and can play just about anywhere in the secondary. He’s more than willing and able to come down from his position to help defend the run. McNutt is noted to be a solid tackler as well. He can drive through the ball carrier and already takes good angles on the field.
He plays much bigger than his size (six-foot, 180 pounds) would suggest.
Additionally, he was a playmaker on offense which helped his ball skills on defense. If asked, he could be a two-way player. As a safety, McNutt amassed 61 tackles, three tackles for loss, 12 pass breakups, and forced two fumbles. On offense as a wide receiver, he added 611 yards and scored 12 touchdowns.
CBSSports‘ Tom Lemming profiled McNutt last summer and said the safety has exceptional footwork and is a smart, instinctive player. He has 4.4 speed and has great ball skills.
With just 15 commits to the Oregon 2025 recruiting class, there is still room for more. Needless to say, Oregon is joining the Big Ten on fire both on the field and in recruiting.
