Michigan Football Lands In-State Defensive Lineman Bobby Kanka
Michigan’s momentum on the recruiting trail had cooled off after missing out on some top 2024 targets. However, the Wolverines were able to gain another pledge to their 2025 class on Tuesday. Bobby Kanka, an in-state four-star defensive lineman from Howell, committed to Michigan over several schools, including Michigan State, Penn State, and Minnesota. Kanka ranks as the 33rd defensive lineman in the country and 315th overall player in the country per the 247Sports Composite. He attended Michigan’s annual BBQ at the Big House over the weekend. Kanka joins four-star cornerback Chris Ewald and four-star linebacker Mantrez Walker as Michigan’s third commitment in its 2025 class. The Wolverines currently have the sixth overall class in the 2025 cycle.
What Does This Mean for Michigan?
Kanka is a rising prospect who had plenty of Power Five interest, especially from several of Michigan’s Big Ten rivals. At 6-foot-4, 255 pounds, he is often the biggest player on the field when watching his film. He has the blend of size, versatility, and big-man athleticism to play multiple positions on the defensive line. Kanka is a bit raw and will need time to develop into a contributor. He has room to fill out his frame and likely kick inside to defensive tackle at the next level. Kanka also comes from NFL bloodlines. His father, Tom, was a standout player at Hillsdale College before playing with the Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Landing Kanka is a big, in-state win for the Wolverines. He is a top-five player in the state and was a priority for Michigan early. The Michigan staff did a good job of closing this commitment quickly to keep other Big Ten schools away. Kanka cited his relationship with defensive line coach Mike Elston as being the key to his commitment. Michigan has gathered a good collection of talented defensive linemen over the past two cycles. Kanka should fit right in with the young core currently on the roster.
Michigan is still putting the finishing touches on a strong 2024 class, but the foundation is beginning to be built for 2025. The coaching staff has always made the top players in the state a priority. Some top in-state 2025 targets include five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, four-star offensive tackle Avery Gach, and three-star athlete Elijah Dotson. All three are top-10 players in the state and joined Kanka for the BBQ at the Big House event. In addition to the top in-state targets, Michigan also hosted five-star offensive lineman David Sanders. His high school teammates Jadyn Davis and Channing Goodwin are currently committed to Michigan in the 2024 class. Kanka’s commitment gives Michigan something to build on and will hopefully generate momentum with top 2025 targets.
