Texas A&M vs. Sam Houston State Preview

Texas A&M Sam Houston State

The Texas A&M Aggies will welcome the Sam Houston State Bearkats to Kyle Field on September 3rd. This matchup will be the Aggies’ first game of the season, and they should be a huge favorite. Sam Houston was an FCS team just two years ago, but that doesn’t mean Texas A&M will be able to relax. Here’s a preview of the week one matchup between Texas A&M and Sam Houston State.

Haynes King Is The Starter

Jimbo Fisher announced this past week that Haynes King would be the starting quarterback over Max Johnson. It was an intense battle, but King offers a more dynamic game to the offense. He will be able to use his legs against Sam Houston’s defense, much like he did against Kent State in game one of last year.

How does Texas A&M’s offense perform?

Moreover, the Aggies should be able to win the battle up front in this game. Kenyon Green was the leader of the offensive line last year, but his departure raises some questions for that position group. Regardless, Texas A&M should have no problems before SEC play.

It will be interesting to see who steps up at receiver in this game. True freshman Evan Stewart is expected to be the X-receiver, and he could win some one-on-one battles. Ainias Smith is obviously the most dependable target, but King needs to decide which pass-catchers he trusts with Jalen Wydermyer moving on to the NFL.

How Will Jordan Yates Fare?

Jordan Yates is the starting quarterback for the Bearkats. He is a transfer from Georgia Tech, and his game is somewhat similar to King’s. The Aggies’ defense will have to be wary of Yates’ legs, or the consequences would be like Dustin Crum‘s performance in last year’s season opener. Yates also has some good receiving targets; Sam Houston State grabbed some great players from the transfer portal during the offseason.

Right To Count On Texas A&M’s Defense?

Overall, Texas A&M is both deep and experienced in the secondary, but the front seven will be tested. There is definitely young talent at defensive line and linebacker, so D.J. Durkin need not worry about rotation.

The Aggies should target to limit the Bearkats to under 10 points in this game. Texas A&M is capable of having the best defense in the SEC this year, and that statement can be made in week one. Regardless, Fisher has to get as many defensive players as possible out on the field. This can help determine who earns a starting spot for the rest of the season.

Concluding Thoughts

Although this matchup may not be competitive, game one should excite all Aggie fans. Kyle Field will be roaring come Saturday, and it will be interesting to see how this rather young Texas A&M team plays initially.

Texas A&M should not take Sam Houston State lightly, and it’s necessary to play hard plus explore all options in the playbook. Even the playcalling could be vanilla, but the athletic ability and speed of the Aggies should be enough to take them over the top. Get pumped for Saturday morning!
