Auburn Fires Mike Bobo

In a move that is not surprising, Auburn offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has been fired after just one year on the job. It was first reported by On3.com. This is not the first assistant coach fired from Bryan Harsin’s staff in his first year on the plains. Earlier in the season, wide receivers coach Cornelius Williams was let go due to poor play by the pass-catchers. For Bobo, it is another one and done year for the former Georgia quarterback and head coach. Last season he spent his one and only year as the offensive coordinator for South Carolina before being let go due to a change at head coach.

Offensive Inconsistencies

The Auburn offense ranked 10th in the SEC at 405.4 yards per game and points averaging 29.4. In the last four games of the season the second half really became a struggle offensively. In the final four games against Texas A&M, Mississippi State, South Carolina, and Alabama they only scored 12 total points in the second half. That is not counting to points scored in overtime against Alabama in the Iron Bowl Saturday. In the last three games Auburn had double digit leads that they were unable to hold. They dropped the final four games of the season.

On the positive side of things Bo Nix did show improvement under Bobo. The junior showed more patience in the pocket and improved his decision making. His numbers were not bad throwing for 2,294 yards and a completion rate of 61%. When Nix went down with injury against Mississippi State Auburn turned to T.J. Finley, the offense dropped off.

Who’s the next Auburn Offensive Coordinator?

A name that could be one to look for is currently on the Auburn staff. When Williams was fired, offensive analyst Eric Kiesau was promoted to wide receivers coach. Kiesau served as the Boise State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Harsin in 2019 and 2020. If not there it would be beneficial to hire someone with SEC ties.
