What Nick Saban Could Accomplish Through 2028

2021 Preseason Bowl Projections- A look at who's in the playoff and selection committee games and can anyone stop Alabama from repeating.

Success has been with the Alabama Crimson Tide football program for a long time. It was, however, revitalized when Nick Saban arrived as head coach of the Tide in 2007. As the head coach of the Tide, Saban has accumulated an overall record of 165-23 (adjusted by NCAA sanctions), six National Championships, seven SEC Conference Championships, and 41 All-Americans. Saban has accounted for 127 wins in the last decade, an FBS record in AP Poll Era. He currently is seventh all-time in overalls wins at 256 (adjusted to NCAA sanctions). He only has 65 losses and one tie in his collegiate career going back to the Toledo Rockets. At 69-years old, Saban still has plenty left in the tank. This resulted in a contract extension at Alabama through the 2028 season. Here is what Saban can accomplish throughout the next seven years at Alabama.

What Nick Saban Could Accomplish Through 2028

Nick Saban Inches Closers Toward the Top

Saban is currently seventh in all-time total wins with 265. If Saban were to have a perfect 15-0 every year for the next seven years, which is unlikely, he would be at 365 wins. Saban would beat out Bobby Bowden (357 wins) for second all-time by a head coach. Saban would still be behind Joe Paterno (409 wins), all with the Penn State Nittany Lions.  He is only three wins ahead of North Carolina head coach Mack Brown. Finally, Saban is only one win away (not counting the five games from the sanctions) from tying former BYU Cougars head coach LaVell Edwards at 257 wins. Accounting for at least ten wins in the next ten seasons would put Saban at third overall ahead of Paul “Bear” Bryant (323 wins).

Nick Saban Could Surpass Bear Bryant

Coach Bryant has become one of the most memorable coaches in the history of College Football. In just 14 seasons with Alabama, Saban is likely to surpass Bryant’s legacy at Alabama. While at Alabama, Saban has accounted for an overall record of 165-23. Bryant accumulated an overall record of 232-46-9 while coaching The Tide. Saban needs 68 more wins to pass Bryant as the all-time winningest head coach at Alabama. Saban has already overpassed Bryant as the all-time National Championship head coach with seven titles. Both Saban and Bryant have each won six National Championship titles at Alabama.

Current State of Coach Nick Saban

To be winning at an elite level nearing 70-years old is remarkable. Saban is one of five active head coaches to be in the top 50 all-time winning head coaches. Not only is Saban one of the best coaches in the sport of College Football, but he is also one of the best developers of players for the NFL. As the head coach at Alabama, Saban has had 106 of his players get selected in the NFL Draft. Of those 106 players, 39 of them were in the first round. Time will only tell if Saban will continue in his dominance in the sport of College Football. Father Time will be Saban’s greatest opponent as he appears to show no signs of slowing down.
